Chapter 36.

Laurel's POV

"Please, please, please don't embarrass me," I said as I walked through the kitchen.

My parents were cooling dinner. Pasta and meatballs. Just thinking about it made my mouth water. My dad was stirring the homemade sauce on the stove and my mom was cutting up some lettuce to make a salad.

My brothers were sitting at the kitchen table on their cell phones.

"Tell me again how you got Hunter Hayes to go out with you?" Brian said. He looked at me and was waiting for me to answer.

Brian is 23 and just finished collage last year. He has an apartment and an actual job, but spends most of his time here. The one day that he was actually going to stay at his own house, we decided that we were going to have family dinner so everyone could meet Hunter. I wish he just stayed at his own house.

"I know it's hard to believe, but he actually likes me," I said sitting down next to Jake and across from Brian. "Go scream it from the rooftops or whatever you want. Kinda scary I have a boyfriend and you're still single,".

"Hey! I could get a girlfriend if I wanted to. I enjoy being single,".

"You couldn't get a girlfriend if you paid her," I snapped back.

"I agree with Laurel," Jake said not even looking up from his phone. "When is the guy getting here anyway,".

"Like about now," I said after I looked at the clock mounted on the wall.

A devious smile formed in Jake's face and I knew from past experience what it meant. He had a plan. And it wasn't one that benefited me.

There has been many times in my past where I have been the victim of Jake's plans. Usually they consisted of some sort of nasty food product being dumped on my head. There hasn't been a prank in a while which got everyone on edge, including my parents. This must be it.

What if he gets Hunter? Then he may never want to come back here. My stomach immediately gained butterflies and I remembered the importance of a steady heart rate.

"If you hurt Hunter I swear I wi-"

"Calm down. Hunter's not gonna get hurt. He may never like you again but e won't get hurt."

Anger rushed through my body and I found myself lunging towards him and grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. I didn't know i was that strong.

With him still in my grasp I muttered, "If Hunter is involved in this at all, I will personally see to it that your 1st grade picture is a viral sensation. Got it?".

He nodded and then the door bell tang. I ran to the door and smoothed out my white lace shirt before opening the door revealing a smiling Hunter.

"Hey Laur," He said. He planted a quick kiss on my cheek before moving farther into the foyer.

"Hey Hunt," If he has a nickname for me I can have one for him.

"Everyone's in the kitchen," I said as I led him through the hall leading to it.

As soon as we were visible through the door my brothers put down the phones an began staring Hunter down.

"Hello Hunter," My mom said as she wiped her hands off on a dishtowel. "So glad you could join us!".

"Thank you for having me! It smells amazing." He put his hands in his pockets and shifted his weight in his toes anxiously.

"Well you can have a seat anywhere. The pasta's almost done," And then she hurried off to put the finishing touches on the salad.
