"You still love Mason?" Emily said, more as a fact than a question. "may I ask why?" Evelyn looked at Emily with confusion and frustration,
"I can't just not love him anymore."
"Even after what he did or tried to do to you?"
"You don't just stop loving someone even if they hurt you. Why do you want me to fall out of love with Mason so bad? Do you really want something to happen between me and Colt? because Emily I'm sorry but that's not going to happen."
"I never said that, you did, and no not just to be with Colton, but I want you to be able to open yourself up to have love again just in general. I'm scared you're going to close yourself off, and think that sense love didn't work with Mason, it can't work with anyone, and that's not true." Emily said, taking note of everything Evelyn had already said about Colton, she could see the two together, and she wondered how long it would be before they saw it.
"I see what you're saying and I appreciate it, but can please give me some time, to at least try to get over Mason before you shove other men my direction? Because Emily you are right, I can't see myself with anyone else, but just give me time to try to forget him first." Evelyn explained, and realized that some of what she said was a lie, she had thought about Colt and maybe what a love with him might be like, but then she would think about Mason and feel guilty.
"I understand, and I'm sorry, but please know I'm just looking out for you, and I love you. I think you are a wonderful person, and I don't want to see you alone." Emily said,
"Thank you," Evelyn said and gave Emily a hug, "I need to get to work now."
"Alright," Emily said, and Evelyn left the cabin.
After the disturbing conversation at breakfast, Matthew wanted to talk to Evelyn, but Emily had beat him to it, so he decided a talk with Colton would be good too. He had noticed how close he seemed with Evelyn within just one night, and wondered what was going through Colton's mind. Matthew rode out to the edge of the property to find Colton sitting on the fence, and he found it funny that this was exactly where Evelyn always came to think.
"Colton!" Matthew yelled.
"Hey Matt," Colton said, holding his hat.
"What's going on?"
"What do you mean?"
"I haven't seen you interact with a woman like this since Sayen. Are you alright." Matthew asked his friend,
"Matthew, I'm sorry, I didn't think this could happen again."
"What could happen again?" Matthew asked, Colton sighed and rubbed his eyes, contemplating if he should talk to Matthew about his feelings for his younger sister.
"I think I like Evelyn, more than I should."
"I knew you would." Matthew replied.
"What?" Colton asked, shocked by his reply.
"I knew you would like her, and I think if you give her time she'll like you too, I actually think she already likes you more than she wants to admit."
"Ok, but I can't like her,"
"Why not?"
"What do you mean why not? What about Sayen? I can't betray her like that?"
"I wouldn't look at it like that." Matthew said.
"How would you think about it then? Because I can't help but feel guilty."
"Ok, well think about Sayen, think about who she was, your relationship with her, don't you think she would have gotten along with Evelyn?"
"Well yes, but what does that have to do with anything?"
"Sayen loved you right? Don't you think she would want you to be happy? Don't you think she would want you to find someone again? To be loved and to love again?" Matthew said. He watched the wheels turn in Colton's mind, and the realization of his words, and then how they struggled against the pain and conflict of his heart.
"Just think about it." Matthew said,
"Should I tell Evelyn about Sayen?"
"Maybe not this instant, but in future probably."
