Ten miles to the east of the Johnson's Ranch live the Miller's. Isaac and Katherine Miller lived on a farm with three sons, Mark who was twenty seven, Mason who was twenty four, and Elias who was eighteen. They moved close to the Johnson's after living in the city for a couple of years and wanted some peace and quiet now that they had two children, and one on the way, they were also so glad to know that the Johnson's had children that were around the same age as their own. The fact that they were ten miles away never stopped them from being neighborly, they had weekly dinners, and we're always willing to help out with any ranch work that needed to be done.

As the years went by the families had grown very close and saw each other as family. Mark and Matthew became good friends, and Mason, Elias and Evelyn became close. None of them could ever remember a time without each other.

It was well known that there was a bond between Mason and Evelyn that no one else shared or even understood. They were together most days and look out for each other whenever moment presented itself. When the war started Mark had been recruited, but Mason stayed to take care of his family. Evelyn remembered how much she relied on him during the war, because even though she did pretty much everything by herself as far as ranch was concerned he always found a way to make her forget the fact that half of her family was fighting and might not ever come back, and how the other half couldn't help keep up the Ranch.
