Chapter 26 - It's Time

ZACHARY DANVERS

Zach stood at the end of the altar just behind Dave as his best friend exchanged vows with his new bride.

Tessa was smart, funny. She was perfect for Dave and Zach couldn't think of any other woman perfect for his friend.

The wedding was beautiful, considering the amount of tears every single woman shed.

He was sure that half the woman teared up because of the dress Tessa had worn.

He couldn't help but imagine Kari in a wedding dress walking down the altar as he stood waiting for her.

Damn, he was already thinking about marriage.

Since Tessa had no family other than Lexi, George had agreed to walk her down the aisle. The wedding was beautiful. But this time it didn't create an ache in his chest.

During Logan's wedding and Dave's engagement party Zach had been alone. He had been alone, without a family, without a wife and kids.

He had thought that this was it. That his life would never take a turn for the good.

Until Kari.

Karina Hart was a smart, strong woman whom he loved.

He loved her and he couldn't wait to get married.

The hours passed by quickly. For the father daughter dance, Zach had expected George or Logan to step in. But when Tess dragged an unwilling Lexi to the dance floor, everybody laughed.

In a way it was Lexi's right since the woman had adopted the kid and raised her when she was just in her twenties.

Zachary sat at the bar with his scotch and looked around once to check that everything was going smoothly.

He nodded at one of the guys his contacts had sent for security. Everybody were dancing and Zach couldn't help but walk over to where Kari sat with Monisha and Calvin.

Pulling her up to her feet he dragged her into his arms.

"And here I thought you'd never ask." She mumbled.

"You look gorgeous."

"Well thank you, Mr Danvers. You don't look any less handsome."

She giggled as he twirled her around. This was what he wanted.

Her in his arms, by his side, forever.

And he'd do his damndest to see to it that he would get it.

A slow song started and Zach pulled her close. She rested her head o his chest as they swayed softly to the rhythm.

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah." she mumbled then sighed. "No. I'm scared."

"Don't worry. I'm here, with you. Let's just have fun."

"Hmm." she hummed.

They swayed to the song until another song started to play.

"I wanna sit."

Just as Zach was about to lead her back to her chair, he felt a hand on his shoulder.

He stopped mid-stride as the man behind him, leaned in and muttered, "The boss wants to see you."

With a grim nod, he continued towards the table.

"I'll be back, okay?"

She nodded. The beaming smile on her face was enough to settle the panic that had set in.

Zach knew where he'd find the man.

They had put up lights and all sorts of decorations along the beach for the wedding. It was quite surprising the work that the planner had managed to do in a few days.

Zach quietly slipped out of there and walked over to the house. He took the steps quietly but two at a time and knocked on the door with his squiggly initial before pushing it open.

The room was dark as night had fallen and the lights weren't on. Though a faint light crept in through the windows from the decorative lights far away on the beach.

Walking over to the nightstand, he dropped down on the bed. A sheen of dust covered everything, since the last time he'd stayed there was over years ago.

He smiled as the memories flashed in front of his eyes. The first time Zach had knocked on the front door of this house, Dave had took him in. He'd looked into his credentials and had agreed to look after how Zach worked for a month as a temporary manager. Zach had managed to impress him in a week and they grew close.

Though Zach knew that Dave was his cousin, he kept that secret close to his heart in the fear that Dave would kick him out if he knew.

Shaking his head he bent down  and opened the bottom drawer. He pulled on the false bottom and pulled out a 9mm Ruger 9E pistol that he'd acquired just a few days ago.

He shoved the gun at the back in the waistband of his slacks and straightened up the jacket to hide the bulge at the back.

A knock resounded and he looked behind him startled.

He didn't see the man's face at first and almost reached for the weapon when he stepped in and his familiar build registered.

"It's time, son." He started. His voice resonated through him as a shiver went down his spine.

"I'm ready."
