Epilogue
“Daddy!” six year old Daisy cried, running across the yard with a water gun. She chased after her nine year old brother, Mateo, trying to squirt him with water. “Tell him slow down!”
Mateo stuck his tongue out, his hair—cut exactly like his dad’s—blowing in the breeze. “How about you speed up?” He was long-legged and fast, just like his daddy. But he had the temperament of his mom—usually sweet, sensitive, but otherwise happy-go-lucky.
Daisy gave him the scowl she had inherited from her dad, it seemed. She kicked it up a few notches, a blur as she rounded a corner and was only a step or two behind him. She let loose on the water gun, hitting him with a scream. “This. Is. My. House!” she cried, throwing her head back and acting like a banshee.
Lou looked over at her husband of twelve years and laughed. “Yep, that’s definitely your child,” she said, smirking.
Blue grinned. “Couldn’t be prouder.” He cupped his hands around his mouth so he could be heard. “Good job, baby, take’em down!”
Daisy turned and grinned, but she was out of water, so she skipped back to her dad. “I got’em good, huh, Daddy?”
He nodded, pulling her into his lap. “Sure did.”
Lou glanced over at her eldest child. Mateo smiled back at her. At the same time, they took out their own water guns and sprayed the two in the chair.
And just like that, it was just like every other summer day in their cozy house. Blue was recovering during the off-season—he had gone to college for basketball, but it ended up playing football somehow—and Lou was the usual stay-at-home mom who loved her children and took care of them. Mateo had just come from football practice, and Daisy from gymnastics. Blue’s parents were inside cooking, and Lou’s were outside on the BBQ.
And everybody was happy.
As the sounds of laughter surrounded them, the two parents had the same thought.
Everything is okay in the end. If it’s not the end, then it’s not okay.
