“Enough!” Verneta yells out to us both as we cornered Conroy.

For some reason, inside me, I’ve had almost enough of everything. I was unbelievably angry in that moment. I wanted someone dead. Conroy was the easiest pick.

I straightened and looked at our red headed leader.

                “Audrey. Carl. Relax.”

Carl was breathing a little heavy, but pulled his gun down.

I did what Verneta wanted, but I wasn’t sure why.

“Audrey. Come with me.” She said a little irritated.

Well screw that. I’m irritated too.

I sighed, then walked past Gabby and the rest frightening Roy a little. Gabby just hugged him away from me. What? They both acted like there’s something wrong with ME.

“Sorry.” Carl walked over to me.

I turned and smiled. “Are you ok?” I worried.

“I’m fine.” He nodded and slid his gun into it’s holster.

I put my hand on his shoulder and let it slide down. I wanted it to end with me holding his hand, but when I made contact, I saw what we went through last night. I side-glanced, then traced my hand onto his palm wanting to see what he’d do.

He just closed his eyes and sighed, and was about to grab my hand when I pulled away and followed Verneta. Stark just stared as I closed her office door behind me.

She sat down and put her legs on the desk. “What the hel* was that?”

“What do you mean? Roy is getting beat up, Gabby is as small as a mouse, you won’t let her do anything, Carl steps in, Conroy beats HIM up? What the hel* was THAT?” I asked as I sat down.

“You know, there are other ways, to handle this. I’ve been handling everything before you came. I have.” She showed slight signs of childish behavior which unnerved me.

“Fine. Am I going to be punished?” I looked around and noticed a few dolls on the shelves. Wasn’t this a book store?

Before Verneta could reply, I voiced my curiosity.

“Uh, why are there so many, girly things around here?” I asked a bit shy. “I thought this was a book store.” I saw a trunk behind Verneta’s chair with some locks of hair sticking out. No doubt another doll.

“It’s not. It’s a little doll store. Look. I’ll punish no one. I’ve had a talk with you, I’ll have a talk with Conroy. Will that satisfy you?” She pulled her long thin legs off the desk and just stared at me.

I recognized this stare. It was…like the Governor.

I turned away. “It’s fine.” I got up, spun on my heels and walked out. Before I could get any where, I turned and saw the sign to Verneta’s place.

                “Book n’ Buy”

A knot formed in my stomach. This place. It’s driving me crazy!

“Audrey.” I saw Stark adjust his glasses and walk over to me with a book in his hand.

“Yes?” I asked ready to bite back.

“I have a few errands to run on the other side of the bridge down the road. There’s an abandoned car I’ve been tinkering with but, I haven’t gotten anywhere.”

I snickered. “Really?” I looked up at him. What was he softening up to me? I crossed my arms. “I’m not sure.”

A snowflake slowly fell beside me. Wow. Already?

I rubbed my bare arms a bit.

“All right. If you don’t think you can.” He smiled at me a bit.

I tilted my head. Obviously he knew teasing me like that wouldn’t work, but I guess that was his way of saying please. Who knows? It might be good to have an ally like him. He seems close to Verneta. Maybe if I play my cards right he’ll know what’s going on and tell me.

“Fine. Let me, just, go get my jacket.” I looked towards my house knowing Carl was inside.

“I’ll be waiting by the car.” He walked away.

As I turned towards my house I saw Gabby walking up to me.

“Hey.” She said a bit fast. “What’d Verneta say?”

“That she’d talk to Conroy.” I widened my eyes as we both walked towards the house.

“Thank you for sticking up for Roy like that.” She smiled.

“Yeah. You’d do it for Carl.” I smiled.

“Yeah but!” She grabbed my wrist and turned me towards her.

I saw she was worried about something.

“What Gab?” I looked at her eyes.

“What was going on with you two? You scared Conroy. You scared ME. It was like…something was wrong with you two.” She fidgeted back and forth.

I bit my lip knowing she was right. I could account for only so much of the fact that Carl and I were both slowly losing our minds. But…there was still so much of him I didn’t know.

“You should, leave.” Gabby looked down while my head shot up.

“Why?” I asked, hoping for an actual reason this time. She only sighed and hesitated. “Gabby.” I insisted.

Her eyes just went extremely glossy as the sky turned gray and the snow drifted down.

“Please leave.” She whispered as if the entire universe could hear her speaking.

But there was no reason was there? Was there? If something’s wrong, Gabby knows, but she won’t tell me.

“I have to go get a jacket.” I said a little annoyed with her.

She nodded, then let me go as I hurried towards my house, ready to face anything Carl had on his mind. Because, I knew he did.
