Still Here: Part 5

                It was a gray afternoon. Rain still came down. It was easy enough to get inside. There was a dark metal like building in front of us that had a maze of rooms. Daryl led me into the air ducts avoiding the dozens of people below.

                “Been around here a while, checked the place out. I know how to distract em’.” Daryl whispered.

                “How?”

                He jerked his chin so I could see a boiler room. “They’d go all around like ants if we could cloud it up in here. Make it go haywire. Evacuate. Then we get the others.”

                “Dex, you go. Take Ronnie.”

                They both nodded and Daryl just looked at me.

                I looked away, for the first time in a long time, feeling a little ashamed, if I felt anything at all.

                “They’re keepin’ Carl in a room at the far back. Work your way over. Once the hallways are musty make your move.

                “What is this place?”

                “Think an organized facility. Maybe to do tests on the walkers. Make some people immune. They been doin’ trials.”

                “Any on Carl?”

                “Dunno. Don’t think so. This is mostly recourses. I think they’re trying to make a living system again. Posts. Seems like there’s more than one a these places.”

                “Which floor is he on?”

                Just keep goin’ ahead till you reach a screen. He’ll be the door 205.” Daryl mumbled.

                “Thank you.” I haven’t said that to anyone in a long time.

                I started to crawl away.

                “Audrey.”

                “Hmm?”

                “Make sure you have an exit. After this goes down, we’ll have to meet up in the woods again. If we can. Just get him. I’ll get Rick and everyone else.”

                “Clay. You help him.”

                He just nodded and I slowly started to move away.

                The smell was intolerable.

                I hated how cramped it was.

                But I didn’t mind it.

                Will you marry me?

                I love you Audrey.

                You’re what makes me human.

                You never had a boyfriend.

                Are you going to kill me?

                Come here Audrey.

                It’s not my fault Audrey!

                You have to stay with your sister.

                I love you too.

                Don’t ever leave me.

                Never…

                NEVER.

                I didn’t wait like Daryl told me to. I reached the screen to the duct and kicked it open. The hall was long and empty. The walls were white but the carpet was a dark gray green blend. I ran down the hallway trying to find the correct door.

                I want you to have all the luck today.

                Carl. Our history together has led us to this. From the first time I saw you, to the first time we spoke, to the first time we touched each other…and what followed afterwards. It’s been a long shared moment. The best part of my life.

                I still love you. I’ll always love you. I want to face many winters and springs together. Everything. I want you to be there. With me.

                I want to sing to you again. I want you to make love to me. I want to make up for all the lost time. Forever. Or as long as we live.

                I love you.

                I stopped in front of a door with 205 printed on it.

                I pulled out my sword, and slid the end in, forcing a crack, then kicked it.

                It pushed open and I held it in place.

                My eyes met with a figure on a bed standing up, then coming into the light.

                “Audrey?”

                I put the sword back, and then grinned, lifting up my ring finger so he could see the sparkle.

                “Always.”

                From now on. Always.
