Carnivals seemed to always be the same here in Lakewood. The excitement for the screaming toddlers, the fresh smell of corn dogs and cotton candy, the whirling rides (which I refused to go on), the druggie juniors sneaking pot behind the frozen yogurt stand and the fact that I didn't want to be here. I shift my weight to my right foot as I wait in line to get into the park area where the concert was being held.

It was Lakewood's 15th Annual Carnival and my best friend, Jess, had basically dragged me here for another night of wasting my life away. I could be home right now studying for college next fall, but Jess said because we are seniors that we needed to attend. It was a pretty big event for the citizens in our town and people went all out usually. To me, it was wasteful and not fun. I glance forward to the extremely long line that was scattered in front of us and sighed. I didn't wanna be here, at all.

Jess, my best friend, had met me when my mother was in her "rough" times to say the least. My mom and her mom, Julie, attended the same "How to Cope with Divorce" classes at the community center for six months and each and every day, Jess and I would sit in our separate cars waiting until 5:30 to come. It wasn't after three months until Jess finally made her move from her moms suburban to my moms pick up truck.

I remember watching her get out of the car and walking over to mine. I wasn't a good communicator especially in front of people like Jess. Jess, head cheerleader, straight A student and class president, was tall with chocolate brown hair, that I envy. She was extremely charismatic which meant talking to her was almost too easy. I had told her everything and we instantly clicked. Every Wedensday, during the "divorce" class, Jess would make her way over to the truck and we would smoke some cigerattes talking about stupid stuff and laughing for no reason.

The line was moving a bit faster now and I checked my phone for the time. Jess pushed her hair out of her face and smiled at me.

"Isn't this fun? I mean, c'mon Scar, you totally would have regretted not coming tonight. Plus, maybe you can make a move with Colton." She says resting her arm on my shoulder.

I shush her and put my phone back in my jacket pocket.

"I know you'll be getting some with Justin, tonight." I reply winking at her.

She flashes her million dollar smile again and looks to her left. Justin and Jess had been dating for a little over two years now. They had a doomed relationship from the start, but each of them didn't seem to notice. Justin, unforuntely cheated on Jess almost every Friday night and Jess knew that. She was just too afraid to admit it. They had planned going to the same college together in Omaha and she knew she couldn't fuck it up. I felt bad for her, to be honest. He was such a dick.

"I don't know. I kind of want to wait." She says softly looking back at me.

Justin, obviously experienced had tried to get Jess into sleeping with him every since their "one month" anniversary. Jess was always too scared, which I understood, but Justin kept getting more unattractted to her each time she denied.

I nod my head to Jess, which was my usual response when she said that and stepped up into line.

"ID's?" The ticket collected asked us and I looked to Jess.

She fumbled through her purse for a few seconds and pulled out our two fake ID's, courtesy of Justin. The ticket collecter checked us out head to toe, shrugged and opened the gate, quickly releasing it after we got through.

"Works like a charm." Jess says kissing the ID. I laugh slightly and walk over to the front of the stage over by Peter and his other band members.

I look up to him as he sets up the stage and can't help but smile. His dorky haircut and smiling face always made me light up, even if I was feeling down.
