To be honest, I didn't really know why I was here attending another California festival, where I obviously don't fit in.
"So, Scarlet? What's your plan for college?" Matt's friend, Shawn asks me as we sit at a table, eating funnel cakes.
"Hopefully NIU. How about you?" I say, taking a bite of the cake. It was amazing.
Shawn laughs for a second and I get confused.
"Shawn's only fifteen." Matt says smiling.
My jaw drops a bit. He looked a LOT older. Was it even legal to be flirting?
"What?" I exclaim. "You look so much older!"
Shawn smiles again and scratches his arm.
"Nah, I've got big plans though." He says.
Matt and Jack laugh.
"He wants to be a 'singer'" Matt says, adding quotations by the "singer."
"Interesting." I say, taking another bite. "I'll have to hear you."
"Shawn's probably dying right now just because you're talking to him." Jack jokes.
Shawn hits him hard in the shoulder and Jack whines.
"Does anyone have money for a ride?" Matt asks, rummaging through his wallet.
"I've got a ten." Shawn says, pulling it out of his pocket.
"Wanna ride on the Ferris wheel once, Scarlet?" Matt asks me.
I smile and nod, taking my purse.
The guys hoot and wink as Matt and I make our way into the line of people.
"It's so pretty at night." I say looking up at the lite-up Ferris wheel.
"Gorgeous, I know. Wish they had these back home in New York." Matt says, smiling.
After a long line and some small chat with Matt, the operator opens the gate and straps me in.
"Move it Matt." Suddenly, I hear a voice say loudly and Matt is thrown outside of the gate and someone is getting on the ride with me.
I look next to me and see, Cameron in the same seat at me.
I wave my arms to Matt, but he just gives me a 'sorry you're stuck' look.
"Get me off!" I yell to the operator who rolls her eyes at me.
Cameron straps himself in and smiles at me.
"She's okay." He says to the operator. "Just afraid of heights."
I roll my eyes and give him the finger.
"You're stuck with me this entire ride, Scarlet Haze." Cameron says, smirking.
The ride heats up and we are blasted into a forward motion. I grab on to the seat tight.
"Hey, relax." Cameron says, moving my hands off the seat and into his.
I pull my hands away and cross my arms.
"You're beautiful, Scarlet." He says softly.
I snort and toss my hair.
"How many times have you said that to a girl? Millions, right?" I say.
He laughs and bit and rests his arm behind the seat.
"No, you're just-I don't know. Different, I guess."
I knew what Jade had said before and I know that she warned me. I WAS NOT falling for him.
"Really?" I say loudly. "Was Jade different too?"
