The morning of my departure to California was chaotic. Waking up at four am was definitely not my forte and to add to the craziness, my mom was in a bitchy mood, as usual.

"Scarlett, let's go. If we don't get to the airport in an hour, you'll be late." My mom hollers from the kitchen downstairs.

I close my makeup case and slide it into my Vera Bradley carry on. My hair was slid up into a messy bun, making my highlights pop and my PINK Victoria Secret sweatshirt sealed the whole look. I had never flew on a plane in my life before and saying I'm nervous was an understatement.

"Scarlett!" My mom yells once again. "Now!"

I throw the bag over my shoulder and click off the light on my makeup mirror, looking at myself once more. I usually wasn't vain and/or cared about my apperance, but today felt different.

As my mom twisted the car keys, making the engine come to life, I pulled out my phone. No messages or missed calls. The usual. It was 4:45 meaning I had roughly an hour to board the plane and I was already exhusated.

The car ride was quiet, the usual. With Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" and all the other overplayed radio songs playing in the background. My house wasn't too far from the airport, but the silence made it seem like an enternity.

After the extremely long lines for security and shit, I finally reached my gate. We sat down a few feet away from an elderly couple who were talking loudly about some cooking recipe. The seats, were very uncomfortable and I felt totally surrounded by people. The gate area for my plane was oddly crowded and I wondered why everyone picked going to California the same day I did.

After about fifteen minutes, my mom suddenly grabbed my hand from my lap. I looked at her, but her eyes were shut softly. She held on tight until the gate attendant announced they were boarding the first few rows, which included mine.

We both stood up and gathered my stuff in silence and she then handed me my headphones and pillow. I moved my stuff around in my arms and then she hugged me unexpectedly. Her hug was tight and soothing, I didn't want to let go.

Eventually we released and she smiled at me, something I hadn't seen her do in years. I was a bit confused to be quite honest.

"Camila's a bitch." She whispered in my ear. I laugh a bit and she puts her arm around me, walking me to the gate. I get in the line in front of me and she hugs me once more.

"I love you, Scar. Have fun and be safe. I'll miss you." She says in my ear. I wondered how many times she had practiced saying that, but it didn't matter to me. She steps out of line and starts to walk away.

She turns around once more and waves. I wave back. My mother was absurd.

As I board the crowded plane, I start to anxious. My seat was the third row and with my luck, a noisy baby and mother sat behind me. The rows each had two seats which was odd, but made it less stuffy. After a few minutes, a fairly attractive guy sat next to me.

He spent a few minutes trying to stick his carry on in the upper compartment until sitting down next to me. His blonde hair reflected off the dimmed light above us and he was wearing a flannel red shirt.

After a few minutes of getting situated, he sat down next to me. I stared out the window, but made sure I could see every move he made in the corner of my eye. He put his arms over his head and sighed, looking over at me.

"Hey." He says. "I'm Matt."

I turn my head to him now and realize he's actually really cute. I smile at him and fix my hair quickly.
