Around 6:00 Camila had given us a fifteen minute heads up. I had spent the last half hour rummaging through my stuff, unloading and sprawling my clothes on my bed deciding which outfit I should wear when I meet my dad.
I could hear mumbling for Jade's bedroom and realized she was either on the phone or video chatting. Half way through unpacking I had to go to the bathroom. The house itself was huge and I didn't wanna travel around alone especially if my father was in the house.
I walk over to Jade's shut and locked door and knock slowly.
A few seconds later her face appears, the same as it had been two hours ago.
"Can I help you?" She says and flips her ponytail behind her neck. I look back into her room and see that she's video chatting, a guy.
She sees that I'm looking in her room and shuts the door a bit more. She taps her foot and I look back at her.
What the hell is she hiding.
"Uh, the bathroom." I say softly. "I don't know where it is." She looks at me and rolls her eyes.
"It's down the hallway. You usually can't miss it. Now, can you stop talking and leave me alone? Listen, Scarlett or whatever the hell your name is, I know we both don't wanna be in this position. I was happily okay being alone in this fancy ass house with your dad and my mom, but you had to come around. Listen, Washington, I'm not playing your shit and you need to stay out of my business and leave me alone. I know we both want that." I raise my eyebrows and turn around.
I could now confirm she was a bitch.
I rub my forehead and turn around making my way to the bathroom. I open the door and shut it quickly, locking it. Suddenly, tears rush down my cheeks and I start crying. I don't even know why, but I feel broken. Maybe I was crying for my mom. Maybe I was crying because I knew I didn't fit in or wondered if my dad hated me or something. Maybe I was just crying for me.
Ten minutes later I hear a knock at the door.
Shit.
"Scarlett, are you okay?" Camila asks, knocking on the door quietly. I grab a tissue and dab my eyes.
"Uh yeah!" I yell back trying to make my voice not sound stuffed up.
"Okay well your father is waiting downstairs for you. He's very excited to see you again." She says back in a soft, innocent voice. "We'll be downstairs in the kitchen, on the right. Come down whenever you're ready."
"Okay." I say back, washing my face with cold water. I dab my face with a towel and look at my reflection.
Dammit. My makeup is ruined.
After about twenty minutes of getting ready, I walk down the stairs. I watch as my hand glides down the wood railing so softly. I glance up at the grand chandelier and talk a deep breath in as I walk down the checkered hallway.
Before I opened the two doors that led to the dining room, which were shut, I exhaled and shut my eyes tight. And then, I opened the doors which led to three people sitting together, smiling at me as I walked in.
The first thing I noticed was Jade's smile which was more fake than her finger nails. Then, the elaborate feast that lay on the table. My eyes moved to Camila, she was all dressed up like she was going out to somewhere fancy and then my eyes moved to my dad's.
I couldn't believe I was staring right into his cold, bastard eyes. I had dreamt about this happening every since he left us so long ago. His smile bright and almost symphathic, turned upside down after a few moments. I was so angry at him and I didn't know how to react.
"Hi, Scar." He says softly, starting to smile a bit again. I look back and find that the doors were shut behind me. I was trapped. Camila got up out of her seat and came over by me, resting her hand on my back.
"You can sit next to your father. He'd be delighted, he's waited for this day for a long time." Camila says pulling out a chair. My eyes didn't move away from my father's as I sat down. He was uncomfortable now. I wondered if he thought that I was gonna hug him tight and start to cry saying how much I love him. That was complete bullshit though. I wouldn't dare to do that, not to the man who ruined my life.
After a few minutes of awkward talk between Camila and my dad, he looks to me and fixes his collar.
"So, Scarlett. How is your mother?" I look at him and shake my head. I couldn't believe that asshole had to start out with that fucking question. He obviously knew she wasn't fucking doing well, that douchebag.
"Uh, good." I say quietly and scoop up a spoon of mashed potatoes. I can see from the corner of my eye that Jade is looking at me. Her hair, was pulled out of the ponytail now and lay on her shoulder. I wondered why they all dressed up.
"Is Washington still the same?" He says again, not looking at me.
No.
"Yeah, kinda." I say looking at Jade now. She looks back down at her plate and eats.
"You know, Mark? Maybe you could take Scar down to the pier later tonight and have a little bonding session." Camila says.
My dad looks at Camila and back at me. "Uh, I don't know, honey. I have so much work to finish. If it wasn't a Friday I would do it in a heart beat."
I look at him again and then glance at the window. That fucker. What a lame excuse.
"I understand. Well, I have an idea! Maybe Jade, you can take her to where you and your friends hang out? The dunes or whatever?" Camila asks her.
"No!" Jade says suddenly and then coughs and looks down. "I mean, I don't think that's a good idea, Mom." I can see Jade trying to communicate over eye contact that she didn't want me to come, but Camila and my dad refused.
"I think that's a great idea! Considering summer is starting and with the fair being in town-" My dad's voice trails off.
"You guys can go after we finish. Just like you do every night, Jade." Camila says smiling. "It's a step of becoming a true family." Camila grabs my dads hand and they stare at each other.
Jade looks at me and rolls her eyes.
I hated them all.
