I sat on the dock of the small pond. A few ducks floated on the surfaces, creating new ripples in the otherwise calm waters.
I dropped my feet into the cold waters. I took a deep breath, breathing in the warm, damp air. The air seemed so heavy today, like you were no longer breathing air but a combination of air and water.
The cool waters felt nice.
"Gonna jump in?" Lena asks me, sitting beside me.
I smile as the girl say beside me.
"If I did that I would disturb the water flowers."
"First off, there are no flowers in the pond. Second, it's blistering hot out."
I look at her. She couldn't see there but they were there.
Large flowers just floating there. All shades of purples, pinks, whites, and blues. It was quite stunning. But in my 18 years, I'd always been the only one who could see them.
"I'm fine just sitting here." I tell her.
"Whatever you say." She says, leaning her head on my shoulder.
I liked Lena, but sometimes her lack of faith in me was soul crushing. Why couldn't she just believe me?
"Excuse me, this is private property."
I turn to see a girl dressed all in black standing at the end of the dock. My first thought was how could she possibly be ok in this weather wearing that. My second thought was who was she? I'd never seen her.
"Who are you?" Lena asks rudely.
"The girl who owns this pond. This is private property." She repeated herself.
"Sorry, I've been coming out here for years, I didn't realize it belonged to anyone."
She stared at me for a moment, "Yes well it does."
"Then we'll get going."
"Noah!" Lena whined at me.
"It's fine," I say, standing up.
We walk past the girl to my car. Lena gets in when I realize I left my backpack by the dock.
"I'll be right back!" I tell Lena as I job back to the dock.
"Hurry!"
I got to the dock and saw that the girl was sitting where we had been sitting. She turned quickly to see me.
"Sorry, I forgot my bag."
"Do you ever get in the water?" She asks.
"No."
"Good."
"Why?"
"Well..."
"The flowers?" I ask, curious if she could see them too.
She stood quickly.
"What?"
"The water flowers?"
"You can see them?"
I nod.
"That shouldn't be. You shouldn't be able to see them."
"Well I can." I say, matter of factly.
She grabbed my arm and a bolt of electricity shot up my arm.
"Ow!" I yell out, jumping away from her.
"You're one of us." She whispers.
I grab my bag and ran to my car.
She was crazy. What did she even mean?
I drove away but I couldn't get her out of my head. The lake, the flowers, none of it.
