THE ADDED WEIGHT AS VERITY pedaled down the familiar, quiescent roads of Derry, made it slightly harder for her to catch up to her friends ahead. From afar, she could hear Eddie's rambling about AIDS and how his mom's friend had attained the disease by simply touching a- and that's all she had been able to make out by a flabbergasted Eddie ambling out in the street.

Verity peered over her shoulder at Ben for a second, making sure the boy hadn't passed out or something. "You good, Ben?"

Under the scorching sun, the boy squinted his eyes, emitting a shaky 'yes' to the girl. Headed towards the small pharmacy down the street, Verity attempted to increase her speed, telling the boy, "Okay, okay- just, hold on."

Swiftly and hurriedly, the red head skidded around the corner of the pharmacy. Following her friends into the alleyway, she came to a halt; helping Ben off the bike. She led him with help to sit against the bricked wall on a crate.

Verity propelled a hand against her head, doing away with the sweat that had formed on her temples from the ride and the heat of the summer day's sun.

After placing a hand on her right hip, she sighed, eyes shifting around the alley as she pondered for a moment. "Okay," she began, grabbing the attention of the boys. "Let's go buy some-"

"Condoms. Right. We already ran out. Relax, Ver," Richie uttered deleteriously, snickering to himself as his friends rolled their eyes, completely unamused.

Ignoring his remark, Verity breathed in, making sure Richie saw her roll her eyes. "Bill, Eds, Stan, will you guys go? Or-"

"W-we'll go, Ver. Don't worry about it," Eddie cut her off with a smile. She returned it, thanking the boy as she crouched next to Ben.

Verity huffed, rubbing her eyes and eventually plopping onto the hard concrete. No one said a word, not even Richie. So, she sat back and waited impatiently for the boys' arrival.

"I don't think you got our names, did you?" Richie leaned against the bricked wall as he adjusted his glasses, speaking to Ben.

"No, but I-I already know who you are. You're Richie," Ben replied, a gentle, nervous tremor in the tone of his voice.

"Ahh, I see," Richie dragged the words out, wriggling his eyebrows at Verity who furrowed her brows confusedly at the boy. "We're quite popular," Richie mused, leaning one foot on the bricked wall and crossing his arms over his chest.
