SHE EXPECTED HEAVING; for fear to coil around her ankles, trapping her in the worst of dismay. In moments where that fear managed to wrap around her body like unpliable vines, everything around her would seem to be moving too fast and out of her reach, as if it were all a harrowing distance away. She didn't know what or who to thank when she didn't feel a tinge of numbness jut her body.

When you're scared, remember you're still breathing. Your heart is still beating. Listen to those beats and rhythms. Remember you're the conductor of those melodies, her mother would say to a small trembling Verity about to get pricked by a needle at the doctors. Neither of her parents were ones to spew earnest sayings, but this was one her mother had managed to think of to ease her then. She remembered it wholly now-when she wasn't frightened at all. Why couldn't she have remembered when she'd been weighed down by fear less than a month ago?

She could not afford to be frightened today, could not even allow a sliver of fear to seep through her. So, she inhaled profoundly, finding that rush inside of her, the adrenaline that would be her savior. They would survive this. They would save Beverly. They would save themselves.

Every step she took fueled her. The strength inside her bolstered and fogged the fear like wine spilt on a white cloth. Eddie's hand in hers augmented the sensation, so she clutched tighter and he inched closer.

"Stan?" Eddie's voice cut through the air.

"Stan, we all have to go," said Bill as they all turned to Stanley.

Everyone aside from Stan had already walked inside. He stood rigidly at the threshold, staring blankly inside. Verity didn't know what to say, what to do. All the words had lodged in her throat, but if she could fuse some of her stamina to him, she would. All she could do was contort her face into an assuring curl of her lip--not even a complete smile, for she could not muster the gesture.

"B-B-Beverly was right. If we split up like last time, that clown will kill us. One by one," Bill told Stan, but Stanley barely budged. "B-but if we stick together, we'll win. . . I promise."

Only then did Stanley step inside. And they descended farther inside. Down the basement they went, and it felt like they had stepped into a portal, the world behind them unimaginable and wholly consumed. No one to call to for help, no one to rely on but themselves, and somehow, that was ensuring. With her hand still tight around Eddie's, she knew there was no one and nothing else that could harbor her.

Their flashlights marked their paths ahead of them, and soon did the racking well loom before them. It was larger than she expected, and appeared to ensure a far more tormenting ploy than the house itself.
