"Honey?" My mom slowly opened the door, revealing herself and Tony. My mom looked concerned and Tony still looked very uncomfortable.
I ignored them and looked at Peter. "What the heck Peter! I told you I didn't want to talk to them. Why did you tell them to come up?"
Peter grabbed my hands but I pulled away and stood up. He stood up too and sighed. "Sam, I would rather you be mad at me than your mom. I mean, she's your mom! Sure she lied to you but she did it with good intentions. Just listen to her, please! If you are still mad at me afterward, then so be it." He sat back down and gestured his hands to my mom and Tony anxiously waiting at the door.
I rolled my eyes and walked over. I stood in the door frame and plastered the fakest smile I could on my face.
"How may I help you?" I said, my voice full of sarcasm. I felt Peter, who must have came and stood behind me, hit me softly in the back in a way that obviously meant I he was telling me to be nice.
"Look Sam, I know you-" Tony started to talk but my mom put her arm in front of his face to stop him.
"Not so fast," She started. "I think someone other than you should take the lead for once."
Tony took a step back in defeat, still completely unsure of himself. He looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here.
I turned to my mom expectantly. She looked at me and sighed, grabbing my hands. I felt the urge to pull away from her, but I knew I shouldn't. Peter's words were echoing in my head: "I mean, she's your mom!"
"Honey, as Tony was saying, I know you're mad at us-"
"Actually, I was going to say she didn't understand why we did what we-" My mom glared at Tony making him stop talking.
"Anyway," She turned back to face me, "I know you're mad but I need you to listen to me." She stopped and looked at me like she wanted some confirmation. I nodded and she continued. "I never told you about your father, which I know was totally unfair to you, but I didn't know how. I didn't know how to describe him to you without you thinking he's a bad man because he isn't."
I looked at her confused. She had avoided talking about him so much that I had assumed he was dead, but the way she talked about him she made it seem like he was alive.
I went to say something but she stopped me. "Please don't interrupt me until I'm finished. After that, you can ask as many questions as you would like." I nodded my head again showing I understood.
"I met your father in high school and not too long after we both finished college we got married. Then a few months after we had gotten married I got pregnant with you. Your father was beyond ecstatic and couldn't wait for you to be born, but sadly he had to leave before he could meet you." Tears had been forming in her eyes the whole time, and they started rolling down her face when she paused. Tears were forming in my eyes as well and I felt Peter grab my hand.
"Why did he have to leave?" I was trying not to be upset or mad at him, but how could he leave my mom and me like that?
"You see, your father's family had gotten into a bit of trouble with some very bad people. Your father knew about it, but had no part in it, until his dad dragged him into it. He originally thought he would be able to deal with it without having to worry about anything happening to him or us, but soon he realized the best way to keep us safe was to leave us. He told me to tell everyone that he had died and he called up Tony, who had been one of his friends in college, and asked him to help me out with pulling off his fake death."
I couldn't believe my ears. My father was alive, but at the same time, I had to pretend he was dead. How was that fair?
I wiped the tears out of my eyes and questioned them again. "That explains what happened to my dad, but not why James claimed that Tony loved me."
Tony opened his mouth to say something but my mom said something before he could. "Tony helped me with setting up a funeral and everything, but he decided he couldn't leave me without helping out more. He set us up a little apartment in Malibu and got me a job as a chef. Him and Pepper spent a great deal of time with you and Tony began to feel like he was your pseudo-father."
I looked over at Tony and smiled. He smiled back, looking a little bit more comfortable. At least he had been there for her even if my dad couldn't.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
This time Tony started talking and my mother didn't stop him. "For your own safety. I was worried the people that your father was involved in would find you and your mom so I constantly found new jobs for your mom in different cities. Telling you would be a risk to you and your mother if you started looking into your father or the people his family is involved with. Finally, I decided to move you guys to Queens so I could be close by in case something happened."
In that moment, I wasn't mad at them anymore. They only wanted to protect me.
"Wait, if we already had moved to Queens to be close to you, why did I have to switch schools?"
My mom again let Tony explain. "Well, when I found out about Peter last year I knew he would be the perfect person to protect you, which ironically doesn't seem to be true since he let you get kidnapped." Tony looked at Peter and Peter gave him an angry look.
Peter argued back at Tony. "That was not my fault! She left the cafeteria! I did my best by locking her in a classroom, but how was I supposed to know she would text Sarah to let her out!"
I grabbed Peter's hand and looked at him. "It's okay, I'm fine, okay? I'm right here."
I squeezed his hand and he calmed down a little and squeezed it back.
"Also," my mom continued Tony's explanation, "you are really smart so Midtown is going to be beneficial for you in the long run."
I smiled at both of them, finally feeling like there was no more secrets. "Well, I think that's all the explanation I need for tonight. Thank you." I leaned in and hugged my mom.
As I hugged her she whispered into my ear. "I love you."
"I love you too Mom." I pulled away and smiled at her. I looked over at Tony and he had an innocent look on his face and his hands outstretched like he wanted me to hug him too. I laughed and let him pull me into a hug, slowly hugging him back.
He pulled away and smiled at me warmly. "Wow, I didn't realize how much I missed your hugs."
"Um, thanks, I guess, but I'm kinda tired so I think I'm going to go to bed now. Bye!" They waved and I shut the door, leaving Peter and me alone in my room.
Peter smiled at me and tried to look at me innocently. "So are you still mad at me?"
I rolled my eyes and leaned in close to his face. I pressed my lips against his soft ones and after a few seconds of kissing I pulled away and smiled at him. "I could never truly be mad at you, Peter Parker."
