Jane sprinted down the hall, the screams behind her echoing in her ears as she went. The creature bounded after her, slamming into multiple objects along the way. She dared not look over her shoulder, a feeling of fear in her gut. She turned a corner and dove for the open door a few feet away... but it suddenly closed. She slammed face first into the wood, and fell onto the ground. She turned around and looked face to face with the creature, sharp teeth protruding from its mouth. She whimpered as it knelt down in front of her and wrapped its hand around her throat, the other hand already torn and large, gnarled, fingers ripped through the gloves it was wearing.
"You'll soon know the true meaning of fear." The creature chuckled, it's laugh hollow and maniacal. It slashed at Jane's chest, landing a swift blow.
"NO!" Jane yelled, standing up. She was breathing heavily and looked around the room. She was in school? That's right! It was just a dream. She sighed and faced her teacher, who was standing in front of the board.
"Miss Jane... what do you mean? Do you not understand?" Mr. Jackson asked her, taking off his glasses and wiping them on his shirt.
"Um..." Jane quickly sat and blushed as the class stared at her. "To be honest, I don't." She lied, looking at the math problem on the board. It was an easy math problem to her, but she just said that to get out of trouble. She looked up at the clock as Mr. Jackson continued his lesson. 35 MINUTES! I was asleep for 35 minutes! She looked over at the other students, the ones who were still staring at her.
"And that concludes today's lesson. I'll give you the rest of the time to do whatever, just stay quiet." Mr. Jackson walked over to his desk and sat down, picking up the book next to him. Jane just looked out the window, cars driving down the street. It was the last day of school, and she was excited to get out of this place.
"Jane." Someone whispered beside her. She turned to look at Dan, her best friend. "What are you going to do over the summer? And don't just say exploring."
"I'm going to go to the Well House, see what's in there." Dan stiffened as she finished.
"Are you kidding? Some kids go in there and never come out. Especially in 8th grade, and they're a grade above us."
"Chill out. I was just thinking about it... it may help me figure out what these dreams mean." Dan rolled his eyes and scooted next to her.
"I just wanted you to know," He scooted in closer, to close in fact. Jane slightly slapped his across the face and scooted over.
"I want you to know that was to close, lover boy." Dan smiled and looked away. Jane shook her head and looked back up at the clock. The bell rang and she grabbed her things and walked towards the door. She was out of the school in a matter of seconds, and was grabbing her bike from the post. She hopped on the seat and began to peddle, when something stopped her from moving. She turned to see two boys, about the age of 16 or 17, grabbing a hold of the back of her bike.
"Well, well, well... if it isn't Miss Sleepyhead." Came an all to familiar voice in front of her. Jane looked back to see Henry Bowers, the school bully. His mullet swayed in the small breeze as kids stopped to watch the encounter.
"What do you want, Mullet Head?" A few kids gasped as Jane snapped back, Henry standing up straight.
"You'd better watch your mouth, little girl."
"I'm 14, so shut up." Jane kicked at the boys behind her and they let go. She peddled as fast as she could and soon was soaring down the street, the boys yelling after her as she went. She turned a corner and was soon peddling past her house, where she made a quick pit stop to drop off her bag. She hurried to get back on her bike as Henry came plowing around the corner, his car thundering down the street.
"COME BACK HERE!" HE yelled after her as she peddled downtown, a few people stopping to watch as she went by. She was soon at her destination and parked the bike, hiding it in a dark corner and tying a chain around the tire. She bolted down the alley way and came to a dead end.
"Shoot..." She mumbled as she heard the car coming around the corner. She turned to see it speeding towards her, and she panicked. She looked around and the only way out... was up and over. She sighed and sprinted towards the car. She heard the boys yelling at Henry to stop, but he continued to drive at her. When she timed it right, she jumped on the wall and jumped over the car, using a trashcan for safe measure. The car screeched as she bolted back down the alley. She was out in the street and quickly went into a store, and hid behind a stack of newspapers. She watched as the car drove by slowly, and Henry looking around, a look of hatred in his eyes. When they passed, she sighed and stood up. She started to turn, still watching as they went, and bumped into someone. She fell back on the ground as the boy ran by her, who was strangely familiar.
"HEY! Wait!" Jane looked down and saw a note on the ground. She picked it up and held it. "You dropped-" She turned back, the door closing as the boy fled down the street. "Something." She stood up and looked down at the note, her name on the front in bold letters... 'Jane Long.' She looked at the door and saw the boy running down another street. He went out of sight as he jumped a fence. Jane looked back at the note and cocked an eyebrow. She walked out of the store reading it, and rode her bike home. When she arrived home, she had finsihed the note and was reading over it multiple times. She picked up her bag from the porch and walked in.
"Mom! Dad! I'm home!" She yelled, shutting the door. Footsteps came from the hallway and soon enough, her parents were squeezing the life out of her.
"JANE! We almost called the police! Where were you?" Her mother asked her, wringing her fingers through Jane's short, black, hair.
"I'm fine Mom." Jane smiled, "Really." Jane slid the note into her pocket and looked over at her Dad, who had a look of anger on his face. Jane sighed and walked over to him and hugged him, and he slowly patted her on the back.
"We were worried about you..." He whispered to her. He put his hands on her shoulders and knelt down. "Just down do that again. Anyway, when you were gone, Mr. Jackson stopped by." Jane tensed up and slumped down. "He told us you were sleeping in class, and that you were mumbling to yourself."
"What did I say?"
"He said that the whole class could hear you. You were mumbling something like, 'He's in the Barrens.' You were mumbling that over and over again... do you have any idea what that means?" Jane just looked down at her feet, and thought.
"I don't know what that means, but I may have an idea." Her Dad shook his head and smiled slightly.
"Then go figure it out." He stood up and let go of her shoulders.
"Dinner will be done in about an hour, so be ready. After that, we're going on a drive." Her Mom said as she began walked down the hall. She set her bag down on the floor and flopped down on her bed. She pulled the note out of her pocket and mumbled the words, 'Never trust the clown.' She laid the note on her chest and stared up at the ceiling, thoughts swirling in her head. All she could think about was the dream she had in class. The way that the creature moved, the way it spoke... it sounded all to familiar. Then it hit her. She flung up and looked at her wall. The drawings sprawled across it were of a nightmarish pair of eyes, staring at the viewer from the shadows. She stood up and walked over to one picture. She stood, staring at it. The details, the lighting, and even the house felt so real... because it was. It was the depiction from her dream. She walked closer to it and stared at all the tiny details.
"Jane." Came a voice from her window. She jumped and looked over to it, Dan's face smashed up against the glass. He smiled, but Jane just stared at him. She walked over to the window and pulled down the blinds. She waited another hour until dinner, and soon enough, they got in the car and drove around. Their final destination? The quarry just outside of Derry.
