An extravagant ballroom with unfortunate souls.
Baby blue streamers taped on the walls.
A white stage that has a glass table in the middle. Golden balloons hang from the ceiling like vines. The first party of Chris's games. Every year he has some type of party to eliminate one of his contestants. A deadly yet beautiful way to die.
Melodic and faint music echos through the room. Soft empty minded chatter is heard from everywhere. One boy nervously taps his foot next to the stage. A tense and heavy air loomed over the contestants of this party. They must be wondering who would be greeting death tonight.
I wander the party and admire the elegance of this year. The theme was almost angelic. Exquisite paintings with an abundance of colors hang on the golden walls. White marble pillars that have Christmas lights draped around them. A small table with square little goodies near the entrance.
A lot of Chris's contestants stare at me as I pass. Perhaps they are admiring how I look or questioning what I am doing in Deneb. I although ignore their stares and act as if they are beneath me.
"Ladies! All ladies please come down to the ballroom to dance," A muffled voice yells over everyone chatter.
I hear a few groans and give pointed look at Chris. He shrugs innocently and nods his head over to the dance floor. With a pout I walk over my heels clicking on the white marble. Awkwardly I stand for a minute hearing the giggling of girls as they pair up. Maybe I could sneak away with the excuse of an upset stomach.
"Luna Lilith" a confident yet shaky voice says behind me.
I turn around and amusingly smile as I see Caliana. She gulps nervously, her pupils growing larger. Then she wrinkles her nose and I notice the large freckles that are covered all over it.
"I need a partner and I'm guessing you do to?" She licks her lips while asking. A nervous tick.
"Yeah I do. Partners?"She nods her head and awkwardly I take her hand. She squirms slightly when a classical song begins to play. Quietly we dance, aware of the eyes watching us.
"It's a beautiful party" I say trying my luck at small talk.
"Yes" she says somewhat bitter " the chandelier is wonderful."I nod my head to agree and crane my neck to look at the chandelier above. It was a crystal chandelier with a large blue light in the center. The chandelier casted a soft glow on the outfits attending this party. A remarkable choice indeed.
"I bet these parties are bland compared to the Alphard ones" she says.
"These are more.." I pause " elegant."That's a safe word to use. Not showing how wild spirited the people of Alphard could be. It was most times disturbing to other packs to see how untamed we could be. So it's better for us to sugar coat how we are.
"Yeah I figured."
Once again we go silent and let the classic music fill the quietness. Around us the other girls chatter about the ball. About the dresses and especially about Chris. I shift my gaze to Caliana and wonder if it's affecting her. Does she feel anything for Chris? If so how does she keep tame from snapping at the other drooling girls?
"You know you don't have to worry about him."
" Why would I be worried about Chris? He's not my-..."
"No" she snaps and I feel my blood slightly boil " Cayson" she doesn't even try to cover her glare. In suspicion I knit my eyes. Without trying my grip on her hand tightens. Not a reassuring squeeze, but a deadly warning squeeze.
"Don't worry" she says " he's made it perfectly clear to me that he does not want me. Or any other female in this dump."
I bite my tongue to hold back a smile. Another song comes on but this time the instrumentals are quicker. They play on higher strings and sharper notes. In unison Caliana and I side step to the beat. Her champagne pink dress bouncing along with each step. My sleek midnight blue dress does nothing more than cling to skin. Outside a crack of thunder momentarily makes the lights flicker on and off. Some people shriek and Caliana by my side shudders.
"You don't like storms, do you?" I ask watching lip begin to tremble.
She shakes her head probably uncomfortable with giving me personal information. I press my lips together and glance around. Inconsequently polite people talked with a tall glass of red whine in their hand. Most of the girls had poofy long dresses that managed to sweep the white marble floor. A waiter with a thick mustache constantly runs past guests and asking if they would like some sort of bevarge.
"You should talk to him" she says avoiding my eyes " you hurt him pretty badly yes. But love is strange. Love works when you don't want it. The same goes for longing."
Now it's my turn to avoid her gaze. Her words seem scape the surface of my own personal longing. I know she is right but I glare at her. My claws unknowingly penetrate her wrists and she quickly pulls away from me.
"Thank you ladies for that dance! Now find another partner, gentleman you can add in now!"
Caliana is already in the arms of a blonde haired boy before I can ask her anymore questions. Could she be right? If I talked to Cayson once would I be able to fix things? Cayson did always like meaningful words and apologies. If I did talk to him what could be the worst to happen?
"Excuse me!" I say shoving people out of my way.
"Sir! Please, sir!" I shout attempting to grab the hem of his coat. The man spins around, his thick mustache moving as his lip twitches. In his dark eyes I can see fear. The waiter I noticed earlier shakily greets me, asking if I would like a bevarge. I momentarily stare at the purple and pink drinks before shaking my head.
"I was um going to ask you something" I stutter.
"Anything Luna Lilith," He says with a professional smile.
"Cayson, I know you must know where he is. He works here?"The man cringes as I ask him this question. Momentarily he closes his eyes and hesitantly opens them to answer me.
"Yes I know where he is..." he pauses cautiously " but I don't know if I should-..."
"Please" I interrupt " it's very important."
"Ok" he says smiling sadly " he is off duty in the library."
"Thank you! Thank you!" I say breaking into a smile.
"Luna" he calls when I begin to turn " please, when you see him be gentle. You broke him so you can exactly blame him for doing broken things."My nose wrinkles and my eyebrows clash together when he says this. I stand awkwardly watching the waiter turn and begin to offer more people drinks. What could he mean don't blame him for doing broken things?
I ignore the remark and shove it to the deepest part of my brain. Then I weave my way out of the party ignoring people as they reach out to touch me. My feet seem to have a mind of their own as they basically run down the golden hallways. Anxious to talk with Cayson and say sorry. He probably will forgive me and then things can go back to normal. I will no longer have to wake up in the middle night and stretch my hands out into the emptiness. Instead if I wake he will catch my hand and reassure me. I crash into the library and smile when I see Caysons back turned to me.
"Cayson I-...." I stutter but stop at the sight of something.
I stop because he is kissing another girl with those delicate lips of his.
Yikes!!!
Another update will be soon :)
