Everyone is connected to their soulmate somehow.

There are three kinds of connections:

The Flower Soulmates,
the Crystal Soulmates,
and the Starmap Soulmates.

The Flower Soulmates have a kind of more "clichèd" connection. Flower Soulmates both have a flower somewhere along their dominant arm. It won't fall, die, or wither as long as your soulmate's still alive. Every time you pass each other, another one grows next to it. If you two hang out a lot, clusters of flora sprout. It's quite pretty, actually.

Crystal Soulmates are more complex. Each Crystal Soulmate gets a 'crystal familiar' as they are born. They're basically tiny crystal animal companions who help you find your soulmate. They aren't spirit animals, though, they can't ward off soul sucking creatures or talk to you and give you advice.
Every pair has one kind of animal. The crystal familiars aren't fragile and are quite loud as they walk, making awkward 'clank'ing noises. No matter what kind of animal they are, they're usually no bigger than the height of half a pencil.
I'll be honest, and I say this as a Crystal Soulmate myself, I think the crystal familiars are kind of annoying.

Lastly, we have Starmap Soulmates.
Both Soulmates share some kind of constellation on their dominant hand's wrist that will glow when they're nearby. They're written in white ink and will turn pink when their Soulmate is nearby. Rumors have it they're more likely to meet if their constellation is seen that night.

Some people have more than one Soulmate. This could mean that they either have a choice, a rare thing to encounter in this society, or they just have a polyamory relationship. Either way, I'm kind of jealous.

"Is thar supposed to imply something-?" A voice broke her from her thoughts, snapping her back to reality as she jumped in place from surprise. She loosened up as she realized who it was, easing up and laying back on the grassy hillside, watching the starry night sky and her friend.

She simply smiled in response, shrugging playfully. "That's for you to decide," She said, sticking her tounge out at her companion.
They chuckled and pat her on the head, lying next to her on the ground.

Both of them admired the evening sky in silence.
