Many years had passed since Gwen heard that sorry from that young boy. Since there weren't too many people that went to the depths of where Gwendolyn was chained up, every noise she heard Gwen jumped at the chance to attack. There were only two times when Gwen would attempt this: one for weekly feedings—or at least that's what Gwen thought; the other time would be was when the Lestrange family would visit their vault. The Lestranges' visits were always interesting, over the years the family forgot who she was and treated her like the beast she was. One time even a young boy within the family whipped the poor dragon before gathering his fortune for school. As the years went by, Gwen did her best to forget what the young Lestrange boy did to her every year, but her sharp dragon mind couldn't forget those events. In the darkness Gwen lost herself and eventually slipped away from her outside and retreated farther in the depths of her mind.
Within the darkness one of the goblins descended on one of the carts with a large, dead animal carcass. The cart whipped around the track and glided through the enchanted waterfall stopping short near the rocky ground. The goblin climbed out of the cart and dragged the carcass to its destination; in the darkness of the underground cavern a weak groan echoed through the rocks. The Goblin grunted as he shoved the carcass in the direction of the sound. Movement and the sound of chains dragging reached the Goblin's ears. The Goblin didn't wait for the dragon to touch the carcass before climbing back up to his cart.
The dragging of the chains increased as the weakened dragon sniffed the carcass. Compared to her size the animal before her should've been a snack not her only meal for a week. A grumble sounded from her stomach, if only Newton Scamander, could see her now; with a sigh Gwendolyn stuck her nose into the meat. As soon as she had finished the dragoness groaned as she curled up on the rocky ground to sleep as a sense of dread crept through her body.
Time crept on, it could've of been days or even a week before anything happened again. To Gwen's surprise the sound of falling people hitting the ground interrupted her sleep. Now alert, Gwen swiveled her head toward the sound of the intruder's approach. Glancing down toward one of the pillars Gwen noticed four shadowy figures at the bottom. Three about the same height while the fourth one was shorter reminding her of a dwarf, then realizing that the shape was probably one of the goblins.
Gwen growled and opened her mouth as she let out flame, giving off a warning. Taking another breath in Gwen was about to exhale again when she heard the clanking of those awful clankers. Gulping down the flame Gwen shrunk back into her corner waiting for the impending pain to shoot through her body.
"They're trained to expect pain when they hear noise" the goblin said.
There was another female voice that answered, "That's barbaric."
"It doesn't matter," a male voice urged, "Just keep going."
Gwen wrapped her tail around her and kept waiting for the pain. It could've been minutes or hours, but the next thing she knew wizards and witches were surrounding her. As curses began to hit her Gwen became agitated and let out a breath of fire. Her flame hit the attackers as she advanced on the 'intruders.' Gwen was focused on the new threat that she barely noticed as three figures crawled on to her back.
Beating her wings up the only reminder that she couldn't leave was gone as she let out an annoyed roar. Glancing around to find the chain Gwen didn't have time to comprehend as she felt a shock on her flank. Whipping her head back around toward the wizards on the ground she let out a huge flame that basically burned everyone within the area. Nodding her head upward, toward the entrance she felt a familiar spark that drove her to continue her break out.
Slowly climbing up the side of the rocky service, Gwen made her way up. Swiveling her head toward the sound of a Gringotts cart; Gwen took her jaws and snapped the track in half causing the cart to fall into the never ending depths of the bank. Gwen took another step up on the rocky path only to slip slightly, growling she dug deeper into the rocks.
In what seemed like the longest climb of her life Gwen broke through the Gringotts bank's main floor right through the roof; sending the chandelier to the ground. Taking a deep breath in Gwen took her first breath of fresh air since being underground. Breathing heavily Gwen sighed she was finally free; that is until she felt a sharp pain hit her side. In an instant she pushed off the building with her back legs and threw herself into the air—no way in hell was she going back—her first attempts were futile as she stumbled through the air into other builds until she finally caught an air current that pushed her high into the air. After flying for a few hours Gwen thought she was going crazy when she started hearing voices.
"How are we going to get off?" a male voice said.
"We jump!" Another answered.
"What?"
"Jump quickly!"
"Now!"
Gwen was currently over a large lake and swooped down closer. The cool water seemed to invite her in as she felt her mouth had gone dry, but ignoring the feeling she continued on. Within moments Gwen heard three tiny splashes, swiveling her head she saw an enough to see the shadows of the splashes, but nothing else. Still paranoid she was still close to Gringotts she continued to fly on past the lake. A couple more hours passed by before Gwen found a smaller body of water—a crystal clear spring—before deeming herself "safe" and far enough from Gringotts to land.
Landing close to the edge of the water, Gwen stretched her head down to gulp down the fresh water pool. This was the best water Gwen had ever had, well good water since her only water source was a murky looking spring that filled magically. Glancing in the water, she could only see the outline of herself, a dragon, and she wondered after all these years could she return to her human form? Attempting this feat Gwen tried to calm down, but not matter what she didn't feel safe which prevented her from shifting back.
After a few more attempts Gwen gave up when she felt a drop in the temperature. Looking toward the setting sun she could only see the bright light dim as it faded and disappeared over the horizon. Sighing she eventually curled up by the spring's edge, it took a while, but Gwen finally began to doze off and fall asleep into a light sleep. However, this sleep was enough to calm her down enough and in her sleep, Gwen shifted back for the first time in fifty years.
The now sleeping woman was still dressed, but her clothes were now stained, wrinkled, and tattered. Despite being underground for fifty Gwen still appeared young looking more like she was in her mid to late twenties not nearly one hundred years old. Her once strong slim build was now just skin and bones from the malnourishment. The only indicator that a dragon had been in her place was the long dragon tail that wrapped around her body and the dragon scales that covered her scars on her skin. Now stirring in her sleep the woman woke up.
Gwen's eyes fluttered open and instead of seeing anything she saw only black and darkness. This resulted in only one action: she screamed.
