They ran, hoping the evil stepmother wouldn't follow or catch them. They ran until they were sure they were in the clear. They sat on the sidewalk to catch their breathe. Sadie was looking at the ground and kept wincing from the pain in her side and her hair was in a big knot. Caleb noticed this.
"Hey, are you okay?" Caleb asks
Sadie nods quickly and forces a smile.
"Look, I'm sorry about my friends being so mean to you at school. They do it to all new people." Caleb says
"How...How did you know where I lived?" Sadie asks
"I live right next door." Caleb smiles "I saw you walk home on your first day in the neighborhood."
"Did you see anything else?" Sadie asks worried that he might of saw Sadie stepmother hitting her.
Caleb shook his head and Sadie sighed in relief.
"Why don't you talk alot at school? You seem so cool." Caleb smiles
Sadie shrugs. "If I talk I get picked on more."
"No you won't, if someone tries to pick on you I'll help." Caleb offers
Sadie smiles. She had just made her very first real friend. Of course Sophia wanted to be Sadie's friend but Sadie didn't think of them as friends just yet.
"How about that walk?" Caleb asks and stands up, he offered a hand to Sadie to help her stand. Sadie took his hand and stood to her feet. The two began walking down the sidewalk side by side.
"Sorry if you get in trouble with your mom for running. I just wanted to get to know you better." Caleb says
"Step - mother." Sadie says
"What?"
"She's my step-mom, my real mom is in prison." Sadie says
"Oh... I'm sorry." Caleb says
"It's cool." Sadie smiles
Caleb smiles back and before Sadie noticed Caleb had enlaced his hand with hers.
Maybe Sadie's life wasn't to bad after all.
