Caleb and Sadie laughed and played around for a while. Sadie was happy to have a friend.
"We should head back to your house now." Caleb says
"No! No." Sadie says
"Why? Is everything okay?" Caleb places a hand on Sadie shoulder
"I-I can't go home. Please." Sadie says she knew what her stepmom would do once she went back. The pain in her side grew more and more the more she thought about it.
Caleb stares at her worried. "Sadie, what does your stepmom do to you?"
Sadie stares at Caleb for a moment but finally she grabs Caleb's arm and runs behind a building. "You can't tell anyone."
Caleb slowly nodded. Sadie lifted her shirt to reveal a huge purple bruise on her side.
"Oh my god, Sadie. Your mom hits you?" Caleb asks
Sadie nodded slowly. She suddenly felt a pair of arms wrap around her as Caleb gave her a tight hug, careful not to touch her side. Sadie hugs him back holding in tears. Caleb pulls away and grabs Sadie's hand.
"Are you okay?" Caleb asks
"I'm fine...I'm used to it." Sadie forcefully smiles
"Used to it? How long has this been going on?" Caleb asks
Sadie looks at him then pulls her hair over her shoulder and showed Caleb a long scar across the side of her neck. "She tried to strangle me when I was ten."
"We need to get help." Caleb says examining the scar
Sadie shook her head. "I'd have nowhere to go if she was arrested."
"What about your dad?" Caleb asks
"He's most likely dead." Sadie says
"Aunts? Uncles?"
"Don't have any."
"Grandparents?"
Sadie shook her head.
"Don't worry Sadie, I'll help you." Caleb promises
Sadie smiles.
