It had been a while since I've seen my mother and thought it would be a good time as any to spend some time with her. I wasn't going to go at first, but her mother talked me into it by saying that she would make breakfast for us.
My mother had her famous smile, one that could sway any person from on her face while she was bringing two plates into the living room. "Oh, Elise, I can't tell you how nice it is to see you today. Everyone else is out and I was left here in the house to have breakfast by myself."
"It's cool. I didn't have anything to do anyway," I answered, my eyes undeterred from the flat screen and I took the plate she offered me. "Not that it mattered anymore."
"I heard that, young lady," Celestine slowly eased in the question that's been on her mind for a while now. "Elise, how have you been holding up?"
"I'm all right, Mom. I'm just so mad with myself right now and how everything happened. You didn't tell Dad about this, did you?" I questioned.
Celestine shook her head, "Of course not, honey. I'll leave that to you because I know you would want to break the news to him yourself."
"And bear the full brunt of his disappointment. He always wanted me to follow his legacy, but it just never felt right. All I did was bring about more pain towards other people." I appreciated my mother not saying anything but it still didn't ease the fact that I was gonna have to tell him eventually.
Kenneth Dupree, my father, was one of FPD's best detectives in his time. He had solved more than three-hundred crimes and specialized in special victim cases. Dad put a lot of faith in me since all of his other children didn't have aspirations to work in law enforcement.
"Mom, what do you think I should do? Tessa just offered me a job with Atlantic Records to work with a celebrity. I told her I would but I'm still not sure about the whole thing. Not to mention that there's no telling when I'll be able to come back to the FPD and I need something to keep me afloat income-wised for a little while."
My mother contemplated my question for a moment. "Working for a celebrity does sound like a lot of work, but it might fun and enjoyable, too. You get to see different places and experience what the world has to offer."
I laughed from her statement, "You sound like Tessa."
"Speaking of which, how is that silly girl?"
"She's the same as always. Hasn't changed a bit. She's doing the very thing that's always wanted to do, so I'm genuinely happy for her."
"Well, that's good for her. I'm happy that she's found her calling." My mother grabbed ahold of my hand and gripped it firmly. "And it's time for you to do the same thing, Elise."
"You really think I should give it a shot?"
"You'll never know what's out there in the world until to take that step and be brave. Who knows? Maybe while doing that line of work, you might find something else you like doing better."
She was right. If Tessa was telling her the same thing, perhaps it was time for me to have a change of scenery and do something different. Maybe taking on a job working for a celebrity wouldn't be such a bad thing. I grinned at her, my spirit slightly better than before. "Thanks, Mom."
"You're welcome, precious. Now go on and give Tessa a call. And one more thing, make sure you find a hot, young man to bring home to Thanksgiving dinner by next year."
