Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles [Los Angeles, CA]
February 18, 2017. 8:47 P.M.ELISE
Time seemed to get away from us as me and Bruno enjoyed each other's company at Roscoe's House of Chicken & Waffles. Bruno had ordered the Obama Special while I stuck with the Chicken Burger with some French fries. I wanted to play it safe with my food choice since it was my first time being here.
Bruno had told me everything about his life from how he started with music, how he became the youngest Elvis impersonator, and being in his Dad's band called "The Love Notes", while trying to have a normal life in high school. We've been here for a little over two hours now and I can't say that I'm bored. I tried talking him out of telling me about his story, but he insisted because it was better than staring at each other with nothing to say.
But then there were moments in his life where he mentioned about his mother's passing and how he got arrested for cocaine possession. Believe it or not, I was surprised that he would tell me something like that. Those were very touchy subjects but I didn't mind listening because we all make mistakes and nobody's perfect. Bruno was only human and he was no exception to that rule.
"Man, you really went through a lot during your UJ years." I finally said.
"I hope it wasn't too depressing." Bruno finished up the last of his waffle. He always felt a lot better when he talked to someone about his problems. "You must find my life a bit crazy, huh?"
"Not at all, Bruno. I find your humble beginnings truly amazing." I assured him. "The story of how you came from almost nothing to where you are now is truly something out of this world. You worked so hard to become the person that you are and I respect that so much."
Bruno gave me that heartfelt smile again, "I appreciate it, Elise. So, tell me a little bit about yourself. Your early life, school life, anything in between. You have my undivided attention."
I giggled from how silly he was being, "Oh, where do I start with this? I'll try not to bore you to death. My full name is Elise Mikayla Dupree and I was born on July 23rd and raised in Fresno, California all of my life. My father, Kenneth Dupree is of Spanish and Chinese ancestry, and originally from Aurora, Colorado. My step mother, Celestine Méndez-Dupree immigrated from Buenos Aires, Argentina to California when she was young, and she's of Spanish and Italian ancestry."
Bruno looked at me. "Your step mother?"
I nodded, "Yeah, my biological mother passed away after giving birth to me. A few years later, my father met my step mom and they eventually fell in love and decided to get married. My step mom filled the role that my real mother wasn't able to do. I also have an older sister and a niece."
"Damn, I'm sorry about your birth mother," Bruno apologized, feeling quite remorseful. "I didn't mean to bring up bad memories for you."
"It's okay. It's not your fault, Bruno." I assured him again. "You didn't know."
If it was one thing that Bruno understood was the pain a losing a parent. He knew that all too well. It was hard to know your mother and lose her, but losing your mom and never knowing what type of person she was is something else entirely. To never see nor hear your mother's voice or even know what she looked like must have been difficult.
He had to change the subject quickly because he wouldn't be able to take anymore sad talk in particular, "Let's talk about something a little more pleasant." Bruno insisted. "What were some of your passions back in high school? What made you feel alive during those days?"
