February 21st, 2019- Desederia's POV

BEING A DUAL ENROLLMENT STUDENT is great for three reasons: first, you don't have to be at the high school all day. Second, college classes are so much more laid back. Third, you don't have to be at the high school all day!

I don't like my school very much, and I haven't in a while.

Once upon a time, I woke up ecstatic to come to school. To past-me, learning and having loads of social interaction was a blessing. Even high school was fun, up until sophomore year. But that was before.

As I gazed into the romantic distance, pretending I was a hibernating sunflower myself, I couldn't help but think of him. As horribly tragic as that year was, it was when one of the most important people in my life would arrive. It was perfect timing.

As if he read my thoughts, my best friend sat down next to me and grabbed my left hand. The grass under us was brown due to the lack of sun in the last few months, but I swore it turned green around him. He could put color back into anything that previously seemed lifeless. I would know, as he's done it with me.

"Fifth period is gonna start soon. We should get to school." He said.

"I know." I answered, not looking away from the field.

Without warning, my best friend stood up and pulled me into the field with him.

"What are you doing? I thought we had to go?" I asked.

He didn't turn around, and instead laid down on his back in the grass. His mother wouldn't be too proud of him after seeing his white shirt that day.

"It can wait." He said, gently pulling on my arm.

I smiled and followed his lead, letting the weight of his arm pull me into a spot next to him on the ground.

We laid there in the center of the field, deciphering with each other what shapes the clouds were that day.

"That one's a dolphin." I said, pointing at the fluffy stream of gas above us.

He laughed. "No, no. That one's an angel."

"But I'm down here!" I corrected, laughing at my poor attempt at a joke.

"Yeah, you're right. It must be a dolphin." He agreed.

I'll never know what we missed in anatomy that day because we never went. Instead, we laid in that field until it grew darker and the air colder. It was winter's time to shine.

Noticing my shivers, my best friend stood back up and we went back into his adorable baby truck.

I called it that just because it offended his masculinity. Most boys either drove nice cars or hid their ugly ones, but he was proud of his old blue Ford truck. His favorite part was the two white racer stripes that rested down the side. They weren't even centered, and I made fun of it all the time. What I learned not to make fun of was the age of the vehicle, as the very next day after I joked about it the air conditioning stopped working.

He had no shame, as it was his last gift from his late grandfather. Sure, I made light of it, but we both knew how symbolic it was to him.

He cranked the heat and the radio, and soon we were both screaming One Direction songs. How embarrassing.

Eventually we ended up at my house, and I couldn't help but cringe as I realized my mom would be waiting, wondering where the hell I was and why I didn't go to my classes.

"Yikes." I said as we pulled up.

He smiled. "I'll wait here for a few minutes. If she breaks out the chancla, run out and we'll flee to Mexico."
