I'm barely walking out the door of the school when I run face first into someone. "Oh! I'm so sorry," I say. I look up at Adrien and relax a little. I know him.
"No, it was my fault. I wasn't paying attention," he says, rubbing the back of his head. "Nino was telling me something and I wasn't watching where I was going."
"Oh, Nino!" I say, looking at the guy Adrien is walking with. Glasses, hat, and the characteristic headphones.
"Dude, I love your hair," he compliments me. I put a hand to my oversized dark red hair and try not to cringe.
"Thanks," I tell him.
"It looks so thick you could use it as a blanket," he says.
I laugh. "I don't know about blanket, but I have used it as a pillow on more than one occasion. It's really great for sleeping in class" I add, seeing Adrien's concerned look. Nino laughs and demands a fist bump.
"Oh, are those Mystique bracelets?" he asks when my bangles jingle.
"Oh, yeah, my friend makes them so I was his first customer," I say, holding up my wrist.
"And second. And third," a voice says behind me. I turn around to see a guy with swooping brown hair, a faint scowl, and a white and grey shoulder bag.
"Oh, Michael?" Adrien asks. I cringe as he gets glared at.
"Actually this is Charon," I introduce. "Him and Michael are twin brothers."
"Oh, um, sorry for the mistake," Adrien apologizes politely. Charon shrugs and looks at me with a frown.
"Another new friend of yours who met Michael before me?" he asks.
"We just ran into each other yesterday," I say. "His friends wanted to ask about when I ran into Ladybug and Chat Noir," I explain casually. I really don't know why Charon has to get so annoyed over things like that.
"Well I haven't met Michael yet, so you're the first for me, dude. I'm Nino," he introduces himself and holds a hand out for Charon to shake.
"Pleasure," Charon says dryly, giving Nino's hand one shake before letting go again.
"Uh, well, I got to go meet Alya in a few. I'll see you all later," Nino says, shooting guns at us as he backs up and turns.
"See ya, Nino," Adrien says. I can tell from his expression that he'd love to be able to go with them. "Um, so you're feeling better?" Adrien asks me.
"You weren't feeling good?" Charon asks sharply.
"I just fell asleep in the subway a couple days ago," I assure him. "Yes, I'm fine. There's nothing wrong with me, thanks," I tell Adrien with a smile. "Charon takes things like that too seriously. Michael knows it's not a big deal."
"It's dangerous to fall asleep random places," Charon grumbles.
"I agree. Are you normally around people so they can watch out for you?" Adrien asks. I sigh and adjust the strap on my bag. Arya's always there.
"Yes, I know how to take care of myself. This has been happening for a while," I tell them.
"Right," Adrien says, rubbing the back of his neck again. "Um, you and your brother look really similar," he says. Aw, the poor boy is trying to make friends with the grumpy twin. Good luck. He seems to realize he needs some luck, too, with the glare Charon is giving him.
"Their appearance is probably the only thing they have in common," I say, trying to help out.
"Oh, so you probably don't have any interest in Mystique?" Adrien asks. Charon's glare intensifies.
"Why? Is there something you want to say about her?" Charon demands.
"Okay, so there's two things they have in common," I speak up before Adrien somehow digs himself deeper. He looks so nervous. I put a hand on Charon's arm to get his attention. "You were heading home, right? You were still recovering yesterday, so why don't you go and get some more rest?"
Charon glares at Adrien one last time before nodding at me and heading off. I sigh and smile apologetically at Adrien. "Sorry about him, he's touchy about weird things," I say.
"There are actually three things they have in common," Adrien says.
"Three? What's the third one?" I ask, confused. Appearance, Mystique, and-?
"They both have a really good friend in you," Adrien says with a charming model smile. "You kind of just become who they need, don't you?" he asks.
"Um, I mean, I guess?" I ask. I am Mystique, so do I really make it three or is it still two?
"Well, just looking at how you acted with Michael and how you acted with Charon, you treat them the way they need you to. Michael needs someone to ground him and his excitement, right?" I nod. "And Charon needs someone positive to lift him up. And you can be both people. That's really admirable."
"Oh, well, thanks," I say awkwardly. I don't get compliments like that very often. My phone chimes and I jump, looking down at the glowing screen. Dad's home.
"Oh shoot, I'm going to be late. Sorry, Adrien I have to go. It was nice talking to you!" I say with a wave as I start jogging down the steps to head home. He just smiles and waves back.
