"So you weren't feeling well the last couple days?" I ask Charon at the back of the group as we head to the school. He shrugs. He doesn't really talk about whatever makes him not show up to school for days at a time, which makes me worry. The past couple months, his attendance has been spotty rather frequently.
"So you passed out on the floor in the subway?" he brings up and it's my turn to shrug.
"Touché," I admit quietly. I have my own reasons for that happening. I doubt he'd even believe me if I tried to tell him I was a superhero. And his favorite one at that. I don't know if he'd be able to connect me with the image he has of Mystique.
"Why do you like Mystique so much?" I ask. I'm not sure why I ask that particular question, but I am curious. What does he think of the other me? What makes him like her?
"Not for the same reasons Michael likes her," Charon says.
"Why does Michael like her?"
"Because she's a business opportunity for him," Charon tells me. I shrug and nod.
"Yeah, okay, I can see that. But he doesn't do the same thing with Ladybug, Chat Noir, or White Fox," I point out. "So Mystique is obviously special to him."
"Not like she is to me," Charon grumbles.
"Okay, so why is she special to you?" I ask, hoping this time the question won't lead into a conversation circle again. Charon shrugs.
"Well, because, she is," he mumbles uncomfortably.
"Describe her to me," I tell him. "You know I haven't seen her in action yet. You have, right?"
"Just a little bit, yeah," Charon agrees. I wait patiently for him to talk. "She's really confident," he says slowly. "She does what needs to be done without any hesitation. And she's really bold. I saw her tell off a couple guys who were trying to steal something and she was so commanding. She's selfless, like when she jumped onto the track to save that man."
"I didn't know you were there that day," I say. Charon jolts.
"I, uh, saw a recording of it. That's one that that one girl found to put on Mystique's page on the Ladyblog," Charon says, nodding up ahead at Alya.
"Oh, okay, I haven't seen that," I say. I should really check that out. See how weird I look in my costume. If my ears are really that visible over my poofy hair.
We're just a block down from the school when we hear a ruckus and several people running past us. As a group we stop and try to see what's going on. Akuma? A tall female figure in a bright red suit with a yellow shirt and black shoes struts out of the school, glaring around at everyone.
"You are loitering! Detention!" She calls, writing on a notepad and tossing the paper slip towards a student leaning against the building. "Look at your appearance! Do you not even know the dress code? Detention! A hundred lines for both of you!" she calls, again using her notepad to write a note that she tosses out. The two students given detention notes have desks form around them, their hands automatically forced to write lines on a notebook that appears. Their hands move frantically across the paper as they stare nervously up at the akumatized person.
"Isn't that one of the teachers at school?" I ask.
"Yeah, that has to be Miss Bustier!" Nino calls.
"And break," I say to myself as I watch the group. Adrien and Marinette stutter out random excuses about forgetting something at home or needing to check on something. Alya runs towards the akumatized teacher, phone out as she ducks behind a car for cover. Nino hesitates before following, calling out for her to be careful. Michael doesn't think about staying out of the way, openly gawking at the scene, and I'm sure will be a desked victim soon. "Um, I'm going to go over here away from the excitement," I say to Charon, trying to be casual as I walk away from everything.
"Good idea," he says. "You want me to stay with you and make sure you're okay?"
"Nah, you keep watch here so you can tell me about it afterwards. Just don't get caught," I say with a wave as I jog down the street to the park. That was a sweet offer, though. Like he cares about me. I check the area and even duck behind a tree to get more cover. "Raya?" I ask, opening my bag. She flies out and grins at me.
"Our first akuma!" she spins in the air happily. "Ready when you are Tris!"
I take a deep breath. "Welp, Stripe up then," I say, holding up my wrist. Raya squeals excitedly as she spins into the bracelet. The flash of grey light, almost like a flash of shadow, always makes me feel like I'm blinking my eyes when I'm not. I stretch in my costume and pull out my batons, swinging them in my hands and popping out the climbing hooks before jumping up, using a hook around a streetlight to swing me to the top of a building. I hop along the rooftops towards the school and see Miss Bustier lecturing as she sends detention slips flying towards Ladybug and Chat Noir. They're doing their best to deflect them with the yo-yo and staff.
"What's the difference between a cat and a comma?" Chat Noir is asking Ladybug as he spins his staff one handedly. She huffs at him.
"Now isn't really the time, Chat," she tells him, jumping to the side to avoid another slip, yo-yo spinning behind her.
"Aw, come on, Bugaboo, play along," Chat Noir says lightly.
"We need to get that notepad from her, not play around," Ladybug chides. "You distract her from up there," she says, pointing to the school roof, "and I'll come at her from behind."
"You got it, m'lady," he says with a salute, extending his staff to reach the appointed spot. "Hey!" he calls to the akumatized teacher, "looks like you could use some higher education!"
The woman shrieks and sends half a dozen detention slips heading his way, he dodges most of them, but gets caught by one.
"A thousand lines for you! 'Education is not a laughing matter!'" she tells him.
"Woah!" Chat Noir says as his hands move on their own across the page, a desk trapping his legs.
"You okay?" Ladybug calls from her position on another rooftop.
"I'm fine! But I can't use my cataclysm like this!" he tells her. I head around side buildings, making my way around the square.
"Lucky Charm!" Ladybug calls, throwing her yo-yo up into the air. Red swirls in the air around her and a ruler falls into her hands. I'm at the edge of the school building as she's looking around to try and figure out what to do with black spotted red ruler. She spots me and double takes, then grins and gives me a thumbs up. I nod and head over to where Chat Noir is fifty lines in of 'education is not a laughing matter'.
"Hey, looks like you need some help," I say, keeping out of view from the square on the other side of the desk. Chat Noir grins at me.
"Didn't think I'd ever need a tutor for writing lines," he replies.
I hold up one of my batons, extending the hook and using "keystrike!" on the desk. The wood and metal release him and he gives me a salute before jumping back into the action below in time to catch the notepad that Ladybug sent flying with the ruler.
My bracelet beeps at me and I race back across the rooftops back to the park. I duck under the tree with enough time to get comfortable before I detransform. I deflate against the trunk as Raya lands into my hands with a huge grin on her face.
"That was amazing!" she says. "We just helped fight an akuma!" A pink wave in the sky passes over us.
"Successfully, too," I agree, my head falling to the side. "Too bad White Fox wasn't there," I barely whisper before I pass out.
