The first few periods fly by, but when lunch comes around, time seems to stand still. Chelsea approaches me, her two clones strutting by her side, and I look around frantically for Mason. He's nowhere to be seen.
"Prince Mason isn't here to save the day, Mermaid?" Chelsea smirks. I gulp and look down at my feet. "You took him from me." She snarls. "I'm not a popular anymore because of you, Mermaid. And if that wasn't enough, your little bodyguard had to go and beat up my boyfriend this morning."
"Kevin is your boyfriend?" I ask, surprised.
"Yes, and your petty little friend hit him this morning. All because of you." she growls.
"I thought you liked Mason." I say, trying to divert the topic.
"I did. Until he started defending two nerds and beating his friends up because of those two nerds." She clarifies, angry as ever.
"I'm sorry." I say the best solution I can think of.
"You should be, Mermaid." She snarls. I turn to walk away, thinking the conversation is over, but she grabs my arm and twists it, making me cry out. "I'm not done yet, Mermaid." She yanks on my red hair, pulling out a good few strands. She turns me back around and knees me in the stomach, and a jolt of pain floods through my ribcage. Tears flow freely, and everyone just simply watches in a circle, creating a ring around us. I fall to the floor, my head banging against the floor. Stars dance in my eyes, and I barely even notice when she kicks my foot repeatedly.
"Hey!" Mason's voice shouts, but I know it's too late. I'm curled up in a ball of pure pain against the lockers. "What is your problem, Chelsea?" He screams. He picks me up, bridal style, and the tears keep running down my cheeks. I can see a blurred version of his face, just a mess of pale skin and brown hair.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Arielle." He whispers. "Principal Ruth!" I hear him call. "Principal Ruth, please call the ambulance." I hear Principal Ruth's muffled gasp, then the beeps of buttons on her phone, which looks like a jumbled mess in my eyes. She speaks into the phone and tells us that the ambulance will be here in five or ten minutes. That is the last thing I hear before I black out.

I wake up to a bright light shining in my face. My head is pounding and my ribcage is throbbing. Memories of what happened flood back, and tears spring in my eyes as more pain strikes.
"Arielle, are you awake?" Mason's soft voice interrupts my thoughts.
"Mason," I exhale.
"I'm sorry, Arielle, I'm so sorry," he whispers, his eyes glassing over.
"It's okay, Mason. It wasn't your fault. Where am I?" I ask, my voice hoarse.
"In a hospital. Chelsea is suspended and could be taken into custody if you want to press charges for assault," Mason tells me.
"No, no way. She would kill me when she got back if I pressed charges," I shake my head profusely.
"Arielle, she nearly killed you. You have three broken ribs, a fractured shin, and a sprained wrist," Mason chastises.
"Oh," is all I can think of to say.
"I'll leave you to rest," Mason says before turning and walking towards the door.
"Wait, Mason?" I ask.
"Yeah?"
"Thank you."
