It was raining.

Big fat drops of water splashed on onto the matted fur of the squirrel and its little body shivered in the cold air. it was soaked, even its usually bushy tail flopped and dragged in the mud. In its paws it held the remains of a rotten acorn, and it bent its grey head down to sniff it hopefully.

It was so immersed with the acorn that its sharp ears didn't detect the rustling sound coming from behind it. The rain continued thundering down, dripping off leaves and hitting the ground with a smack, masking the whispered apology that the squirrel wouldn't have been able to understand anyway.

There was a loud squeak as two hands grabbed the squirrel off the ground, and the mouldy acorn fell out of its paws. A few seconds passed, and the body of the squirrel hit the ground with a thump. Blood trickled down its wet fur as it lay next to the acorn, both of them doomed to rot for the rest of time.

'I'm sorry,' repeated Yoohyeon, her eyes wet with tears as she wiped the blood from her mouth. She stared at the squirrel's grey body for a while, knowing that she deserved to be in its place.

Sodden with rain, she continued walking across the muddy path, her tears of remorse mixing with the rain that fell on her face. She looked as miserable as she felt.

Damnit, she didn't want to hurt anyone. She was still full of that unquenchable thirst for blood that hadn't gone away since she was turned. Animal blood only half worked. It couldn't satiate her thirst like human blood, but it was enough to keep her alive. For now.

She clutched the voodoo doll in one of her hands, using it to track Jiu's scent. That was another thing she'd discovered: she could smell blood and hear heartbeats. Since the voodoo doll had been with Jiu, there was a faint trace of her on it that only Yoohyeon could detect.

That was what she'd decided to do: find Jiu, and at least get an explanation from her. Jiu had seemed almost accustomed to this forest, meaning she must have learn things from the room with the mirrors. She had known about vampires, and she had seemed oddly calm.

But maybe that was just Jiu. Yoohyeon almost smiled. Jiu was always the calm one, the leader, the protector. She was loyal and helpful, and Yoohyeon had always trusted her. Even with her serious traits, she had an endearing charismatic personality, and they sometimes joked that she was the youngest instead of Gahyeon.

Yoohyeon wondered how Gahyeon was coping with this. She was quite a few years younger than the rest of them, so she was bound to be terrified. She wondered how all of them were doing: Gahyeon, Sua, Handong, Dami... Maybe they'd suffered the same twisted fate she had. Maybe they were dead.

Her legs felt heavy as she traipsed through the sludgy ground, and a sleep-deprived, delirious part of her wondered if she could turn into a bat and fly to Jiu. She was just about to give up and have a rest when she noticed a familiar shape in the distance.

Her blood ran cold as the silhouette of the old house loomed before her. Instinctively, she hid behind a tree and peered through the leaves. There were several dozen cloaked figures positioned outside with a guard-like stance, and she assumed they were waiting for her and her friends. She didn't know what it was about the old house, but it had to be important to those vampires if they were so intent on preventing people from entering.

She shivered slightly, the memory of two of them turning her resurfacing. It had been so terrifying, she had felt cornered as they'd swaggered almost drunkenly towards her and sank their fangs into her, weakening her, draining her.

Her breath was heavy, forming little clouds in front of her in the frigid air. She didn't want to remember it. Not now. And she didn't want to go anywhere near that house again, but if Jiu was there...
