'Wheeere aaaare yoouu?'

The sing-song voice bounced off the walls, and Siyeon felt Yoohyeon cringe against her.

They were currently huddled together behind a large piece of rubble in one of the mostly destroyed corridors, not daring to say a word. Siyeon was holding Yoohyeon's wrist tight, half-subconsciously and half-completely-aware-she-was-doing-this, the warmth in her wrist being the only thing of comfort at the moment.

She tried to keep her panicked breaths as quiet as possible. As soon as the fighting had started, Siyeon had grabbed Yoohyeon's hand and ran, not looking back. She couldn't look back. She had to trust, she had to believe that the others would make it out alive. But Yoohyeon...

She was too weak. Vampires clearly needed a lot more blood than Siyeon had been able to give her, and Siyeon couldn't defend her as a mere human. So, hating herself for leaving the others, she ran like a coward, promising herself she was doing it to save her friend. Friend.

But Gahyeon had seen them run and had followed them all the way here. Siyeon would have kept running if it weren't for a dead end at the end of the corridor. So, thinking hurriedly, she'd pulled Yoohyeon behind the mound of stone with her and prayed that Gahyeon wouldn't find them.

'Siiiiyeonieeee? Yooohyeeooniieeee?'

Gahyeon sounded close now. Too close. Holding back a sob, Siyeon squeezed Yoohyeon's wrist tighter. Yoohyeon's expression was unreadable, but she felt a small something grasp her hand tighter. They waited, the eerie sound of Gahyeon's voice sending a chill down Siyeon's spine, but after a short while the voice got slowly quieter, as if she'd turned down another corridor.

A few minutes passed, and then Yoohyeon spoke, 'Do you think the others are okay?'

Siyeon bit her lip. 'I don't know,' she replied honestly. 'Handong and Dami have their magic, and they should be with Jiu...'

'Do you think the demon will... possess her again?'

She didn't know how to answer. 'I... If it does, at least we'll know it isn't her this time.'

Yoohyeon swallowed, her eyes trailing to the ground. 'I can't believe we never knew it was her. Back then... It was like the demon had memorised every trait she had.'

Siyeon muttered, 'I can't believe I didn't realise she—the demon was the one who sliced my wrist open.' It was a statement that hung in the air, blunt and open. Siyeon felt Yoohyeon tense beside her and continued impulsively, 'I didn't really think about who'd cut me. It was hard to, when most of the time I was thinking of what happened afterwards.'

Yoohyeon only nodded, so quiet, so downcast. The complete opposite of the person she'd been before. Siyeon couldn't think of a single day before the forest when Yoohyeon hadn't smiled. Her infectious sense of humour and charismatic laugh were two of the main reasons Siyeon had fallen for her. The old Yoohyeon was still there, but she was buried underneath a sense of sadness and reluctance.

Siyeon continued, still not hearing Gahyeon's voice, 'I never got to finish what I wanted to say when we were in the house. I meant it when I said I loved you. More than anything. It took me a while to fully realise it... But now, being here, having l-lost someone and being at risk of dying too, I've realised that life is cruel and short. We might die today, so I want you to know how I feel.

'I don't care if you have fangs and red eyes. I don't care that you bit me. None of that matters anymore. All I want is to hold you and hug you and talk, and pretend that everything's okay. I want you to smile again. I don't want you to hurt anymore. When you're hurt, it... it kills me... It hurts me more than you'll ever know. I understand if you don't feel the same... about me. I won't... if you don't want to... I mean... I'll underst—'
