'It's there. It's really there.'
Siyeon and Sua stood together, a silent, icy wind rushing past them as they remained still, staring at the old house. Even in daylight it reeked of gloom and nightmares. It hadn't changed since they'd first arrived; it had no reason to, yet it felt odd seeing it exactly how it had been when so many other things had changed. Out of everything, the house was the one thing that remained the same.
A shiver ran down Sua's spine and she involuntarily grabbed Siyeon's hand. 'Have you seen any of the hooded figures yet?' she whispered. Siyeon shook her head.
'Perhaps they only come out at night,' murmured Siyeon. 'But we have to be careful. They're fast — Y-Yoohyeon and I barely outran them.'
A sudden question sparked in Sua's mind. 'How did you escape the house?' she asked.
'Same as you, I guess. Ran like our lives depended on it and got lucky.'
There was a moment of silence. Sua said, 'Do you think the others are still in there? Dami and Handong?' They were the only two completely unaccounted for. However, from what the prophecy had said, they didn't seem to be entirely normal either.
'There's only one way to find out.' Siyeon swallowed, her eyes darting in every direction as she took a step forward. Sua went with her, each movement feeling like a step closer to doom. Were they walking straight into a trap? There was so much they didn't know, and for all they knew death itself could be lurking behind those battered, wooden doors.
If you go to the house, if you go to Jiu, it will kill you.
Gahyeon's voice rang in her ears, urgent and desperate. She'd tried so hard to warn Sua of everything, and yet here she was, walking right into the place Gahyeon had told her she had to avoid.
I'm sorry, Gahyeon, she thought, If I die, I'll send you a postcard from hell. Oh and you'll have to drop the batshit-crazy act too, or I'll haunt you.
God, she felt almost as delusional as Gahyeon had been. Writing farewell letters inside your head wasn't a particularly sane thing to do. Maybe the terror really was affecting her brain.
The house loomed in front of them now, and Sua stopped, trying to steady her breathing. In the daylight, she could see the gruesome details. It seemed to be constructed mainly of wood and old bricks, which appeared to be crumbling before her eyes. Every crevice was laced with cobwebs, the windows were smashed, and every room inside was pitch black despite the sunlight streaming through the broken windows. Was it Sua's imagination or had her surroundings gone darker too? It was as if the house was sucking every particle of light from the air.
Her skin prickled with cold as something began hitting her skin. Tiny drops of water patted her skin like needles. She looked up, expecting thick, grey clouds.
The sky was the brightest, clearest blue.
A horrifying chill raced down her spine.
Sua whipped round, pulling a bemused Siyeon round with her. Her heart pounded ferociously in her chest, her lungs were closing up from fear, she couldn't even scream.
Why this why now why her?
Gahyeon's blazing blue eyes bored into her, bright and wild with nothingness. Her pupils were two tiny, black dots in a raging sea of psychosis. Sua had never seen anything so horrifying.
Through cracked, icy lips Gahyeon uttered the same words, repeating them like a mantra as she glided towards Sua, her hand raised and flickering with power.
'Not yet, not yet, not yet, not yet, not yet...'
Thinking fast, Sua turned to Siyeon, who was staring at Gahyeon and seemed to be in a state of numb shock. She grabbed her shoulders, giving her a quick shake to get her attention.
