Yoohyeon awoke with a dry throat and a pounding headache.

She didn't think she'd ever slept so shittily in her life.

She'd spent the night tossing and turning, and when she'd actually managed to sleep, she'd had horrifically vivid dreams about... blood.

She knew that her dreams were trying to tell her something, and she knew what that something was.

But something inside her whispered 'monster' so she decided to forget about those dreams.

And she turned to the newly awoken girl next to her.

Siyeon smiled when she awoke to Yoohyeon's face. Somehow just looking at her always improved her mood, so this was a pretty great thing to wake up to. Though when she looked closer, Yoohyeon had dark circles around her eyes and looked like she hadn't slept very well.

'You okay?' asked Siyeon, her happiness changing to concern.

Yoohyeon was silent for a moment, she appeared to be staring into space. Siyeon noticed she was gazing at her neck, probably unconsciously. But then her eyes met Siyeon and she smiled.

'I'm fine, I just didn't sleep well,' she replied, her voice a bit hoarse.

'Well, that's understandable,' said Siyeon, sighing as she remembered their situation. Stuck in a creepy forest with no food and no friends. Great.

'I'll go and get some water,' said Yoohyeon abruptly, quickly getting up and walking towards the stream.

Siyeon nodded slowly, confused at her friend's weird behaviour. She wondered if she'd said something to upset her.

She pushed the thought out of her mind and focused on trying to wrap her head around the events that had happened yesterday. They'd arrived at the forest, been ambushed by hooded figures... with fangs. Fangs. That meant they couldn't be human. Yet they'd had human bodies and ran and fought like humans. So they couldn't be animals either, at least not ones she knew about. So what were they? It just didn't make any sense.

They could be vampires, said a little voice at the back of her head. Siyeon shook her head, scolding herself for being so ridiculous. Vampires didn't exist. Neither did werewolves, witches, fairies, or any fantastical creature.

So why did she get chills just thinking about it?

Yoohyeon had better hurry up with that water.

Yoohyeon crouched at the edge of the stream, splashing water from her cupped hands onto her face. Her breathing was erratic, and her hands shook.

What the hell was happening to her?

She breathed in deeply, trying to calm herself.

'It's fine,' she muttered, 'It's nothing. It's fine.'

When she'd woken up, she hadn't realised how hungry she was. And as soon as she turned to Siyeon...

She had not been looking at her neck.

She wasn't one of them.

Yoohyeon gradually let the water sitting in her cupped hands trickle back into the stream. Her heart was racing, she could feel beads of sweat on her forehead. Slowly, she looked towards the clear water of the stream, and saw her reflection staring back at her.

With red eyes.

Yoohyeon felt the panic building up inside her, and was trembling so much she could hardly breathe properly. As she opened her mouth to cry, or scream, she saw the sharp fangs protruding out of her mouth.

No, no, no, no.

This couldn't be happening.

'Okay, okay, j-just breathe,' she told herself, and tried to calm herself down. She knew that panicking would not help her right now. Maybe if she calmed herself down enough the red eyes and fangs would disappear. She began thinking of nice things, and slowly but surely, she watched in a kind of horrible fascination as the elongated canines slid up into her gum and her eyes faded back to their normal colour.

Yoohyeon had somehow willed herself into a state of simmering anxiety—not panic, just anxiety. Instead of worrying about what she'd somehow become, she began wondering what she could do.

Was there anyway she could turn herself back human? Oh god, she wasn't even human anymore. The thought hit her like a brick and she had to calm herself down again for a few minutes. Was there any way she could survive without... without... Yoohyeon wouldn't let herself even think those words. There had to be a way. But she'd have to find out fast, because she didn't think she could live with herself if she ever hurt Siyeon.

Siyeon. How was she going to hide this from her? What if she found out? She'd be terrified, and probably abandon her. Yoohyeon couldn't let that happen. She had to be there for Siyeon, she wouldn't leave her alone in this forest.
Yoohyeon sat very still for a few minutes, analysing her feelings and thoughts. She still felt normal. She didn't have any super hearing or strength as far as she knew, but for all she knew that could activate once she... drank... blood.

The only difference she felt was that unending, torturing hunger. She felt like she hadn't eaten in two weeks. She felt so empty and tired and weak. Her stomach felt like it was tying itself into a knot and her head felt like someone was stabbing it with millions of tiny needles. And all she could think about was blood. It was as if it was some kind of drug, pulling her towards it, compelling her to give in to her new instincts. And there were moments where she almost, almost considered giving in.

It scared the hell out of her.

Yoohyeon was about to get up and go back to Siyeon, when she heard a cry of joy. She stood up and ran towards Siyeon, wondering what she was yelling about. Then she burst through the trees and saw Siyeon crying and embracing a very familiar figure.

Yoohyeon didn't think she'd ever felt such relief in her life.

It was Jiu, their friend and leader, Jiu, who'd been brave enough to sacrifice herself for them. She'd gone to create a diversion so the others could escape the vampires by leading them into that old house with the mirrors. And they'd heard her scream as the door locked itself with her inside. They hadn't seen her since.

It was Jiu, whom she thought was dead.

But here she was. Alive, unscathed, and smiling at her.

Yoohyeon burst into tears.
