Stefan Salvatore and his brother Damon were vampires. And after the initial shock that her boyfriend was a vampire, they were still in love.
A few months later, Elena's witch friend Bonnie and her Grams opened the tomb that was closed off a century ago, so Damon could be reunited with his first love, Katherine Pierce.
After finding out that Katherine was not in the tomb, Damon threw a blood bag at the walls of the tomb in outrage, causing it to break and blood to splatter. Exiting the tomb, he did not realize that the tomb spell was broken and that all 27 vampires inside the tomb, had escaped.
What no one knew about the tomb, was that there was a secret door, that led to a room that held one person. Aubrey Mikaelson. After her death, the family buried Aubrey in the forest, though what they didn't know, was that her body stayed the same for a thousand years and once the tomb spell was broken, she would awake.
