The next few weeks pass in a blur of activity. Assessments start and we hardly get any free time for training. The one thing that I didn't anticipate about high school is the amount of work. But I make sure to spend a little time each day to work on my Gyft. At the moment, I can move objects around with my mind, and I can read people's thoughts. Not the I can reveal all of your secrets kind of mind reading, I just sort of skim the surface of your mind, just the immediate thoughts that rise up. But there are some people that I have promised myself I won't read. Will. Alliya. Lexi. The doctors have some sort of shield on their minds that stops me from reading them, so I don't even try. Unfortunately Friday's gone a bit off the rails since Jonas' disappearance. Strange[er] things have been happening around the Institute, the doctors and instructors are acting really shady.
"Emmi!" Someone calls in a panic. I look up. One of the doctors is running towards me.
"Have you seen Tomas?" She asks. I shake my head.
"Why?"
She bites her lip suspiciously.
"No reason."
I don't believe her. After dinner, to doctors call us all into the courtyard.
"We regret to inform you that one of your peers, Tomas, has gone missing. Until we can find him you will all be on lockdown in your rooms, no late night visits to your friends, no sneaking into the kitchens, nothing. We believe that there may be a hostile threat in the facility and you will be notified if the situation progresses." Says Dr Grayson.
Murmured whispers ripple through the crowd. Everyone is sharing nervous looks.
"Please do not panic, it won't help." Interrupts Dr Forsooth. "Stay calm and act like nothing out of the ordinary is happening."
I purse my lips. A Gyfted is missing and they're just acting like it's no big deal.
As the doctors herd us back toward our rooms, Alliya and I mind whisper about what this could mean.
<if Tomas is missing, do you think other Gyfted might disappear as well?> I ask. I can't see Alliya but I can feel her presence.
<i don't know, but we have to be careful> she warns me.*switchy-switch to Michelle's POV*
I unlock the door to my room, taking in the dull walls and furniture. I sigh heavily. This is going to be my only home for a few weeks (hopefully) or until they can sort this mess out. I sprawl onto the bedcovers in despair. Stupid Tomas getting himself lost. Now the rest of us have to suffer in our rooms for ages. I undress and change into my nightgown. Old fashioned, I know, but so am I. I turn the light off and wander into my bathroom. I brush my teeth, and braid my hair, a monumental task in itself. My hair reaches down to my thighs and braiding it takes up to 10 minutes. Then I turn off the bathroom light and jump into bed. Or, try to. I land on the edge of the bedframe, jabbing my hip and knocking over the lamp.
"Goddam it!" I say out loud. In the dim light of the moon I can see the powdered glass of the lamp bulb glittering on the wooden floorboards. I step backwards, straight into a huge shard of glass.
I swear to God, the sound of my scream must have reached to Africa. I sit down heavily. The piece of glass is embedded in my foot, leaking blood. I try not to gag, and gingerly wrap my fingers around the glass. With a grotesque sucking sound and an extreme amount of pain, I pull it free from my flesh. Blood streams freely from the gaping wound. I quickly use my powers to knit up my skin but there is still blood staining the floor. I sweep up the glass and grab a towel to mop up the blood. I toss the towel in the sink and walk back into my room. My foot still aches from the glass but it is significantly better now. I switch off the light and am bathed in darkness. My first mistake.
Creak.
A floorboard.
The door.
Shadows.
I whip around, trying to see what made the sound.
Shadows dash.
Rough hands grip my arms.
A sack is thrown over my head.
Black.
Breathing in my ear.
"Michelle. I'm sure He will be happy to see you."
I try to scream, no sound comes out.
A sharp pain, someone slams my head.
Sleep.A/N: Cliffhanger?!?!? Very short chapter lol. I'm thinking about continuing but I don't know if I have enough time. If I do continue, the updates will be slower as I am also working on another book. 👍👍👍
