Chapter three
Ruins
It's just my luck that deep thunder boomed above and it started to rain on my brisk walk to school, annoyed I put my hood up, crossed my arms over my stomach and walked a little quicker. There wasn't a sidewalk in this little town in Virginia, so I had to walk halfway on the pavement and halfway in the little grassy/muddy area next to the ditch to not get hit by passing cars. Good thing that school wasn't far.
I got dizzier and my headache got worse as I walked. I knew it was from the cut, I had lost allot of blood. I watched the puddles in the potholes fill up on the road, as I shivered from the cold morning rain and wondered if Damon went to my school, he looked my age...I decided I would look for him at school today, and if I saw him, I had to find out what happened in the cemetery.
Distracted and dazed by my thoughts and daydreams of memories that didn't make sence to me, I realized some time later, that it felt like i'd been walking entirely too long. I looked up at the nearest street sign in front of me and I froze. The rain seemed to fall extra hard as I stood there gawking at my old street sign. I turned my head to the left and down the road, I could still make out the burned remains of my old house at the end of the street. I shook hard now out of fright and because of how cold I was growing. I was drawn to my old house, I don't know why but I began walking down the unpaved road filled with mud holes and memories.
Something moved fast behind me, I heard it and felt it as I quickly spun around borderline ready to scream. Nothing was there. I wobbled and almost fell when I had turned around. I slowly turned back around and continued walking cautiously. It reminded me of what happens to me in the cemetery, turning around to see nothing but I know that there was something there.
I kept getting the feeling that somebody was watching me. A few feet in front of me somebody nonchalantly stepped out from the left side of the dense forest.
I stopped dead in my tracks, instinct kicked in again and I started walking backwards immediately. I was glad I still had my dagger in my back pocket. I looked back for a second so not to step in the giant mud hole, and turned just as quickly back to the person. She was inches from me now, I gasped and prepared myself to scream, then I realized It was a pretty blond girl my age. I went wide eyed as she smiled and her canine teeth became longer than normal and her eyes turned from light green to a light purple.
I didn't like how she felt, she felt bad and scary.
VERY confused and frightened, I screamed. A loud, girlie, ear piercing scream. I quickly turned and ran like hell despite how dizzy I was. She laughed behind me, and that made me run faster because she was probably a serial killer or a mass murderer or something and my first instinct was to run. At the end of the road, by the street sign again, I looked back hoping she wasn't following me. She was gone.
Again instinct spoke to me, 'behind you...' Chills ran up my spine.
I closed my eyes and thought of so many curses my mom would have grounded me until I was eighty. A tear escaped when the laugh came from behind me again. I open my eyes and slowly turned, shaking so much I thought I was probably comparable to vibrating .
The blond girl stood before me mimicking my fright by sticking out her bottom lip and fake shivering, then bursting out into laughter.
I grew a pair (metaphoricaly) and blurted out ,"W-what do you want?".
Something growled from behind me and I shut my eyes tightly and balled up my fists to stop from shaking. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears. I wanted to see what was behind me, what had growled, but I didn't want to turn my back to this girl, plus for some strange reason I got the feeling whatever was behind me was on my side.
The girl clucked the tongue "Now now, it's okay Selene, it's just death.." she laughed.
My thoughts raced, 'How did she know my name? what the hell was behind me? who the hell is this girl? oh no.....I'm going to die, there going to kill me and nobody is going to find me.'
Tears rolled out of my closed eyes, and they wanted to snap open when a mans voice, a familiar one, from the cemetery, and my memories, spoke from behind me and suddenly, I felt hopeful.
"Keep her out of this Eve, She's HUMAN! and I'M THE ONE WHO KILLED MASON, NOT HER! JUST LEAVE HER OUT OF THIS!", his former hypnotic voice gone hard and protective. I was so confused. I squeezed my eyes shut ever harder as I felt a hand brush my cheek. I was so scared, I don't want to die...I don't wanna die.
"Fine Damon, since your so eager you'll go first. When I'm done with you, then i'll get to her...stay." her fiery voice trailed off with the soun of her footsteps.
I thought she might have left. I opened my eyes and saw her lunged for my neck, I cried out as she bit me, I tried pulling her hair and shoving her off of me but she didn't seem phased at all. Somebody else's arms were trying to pull her from me but it wasn't working either. Her teeth felt hot as they bit down harder, and I got dizzier as she drank the blood that came from the wound.
I heard muffled noises and I felt muffled touches at the back of my head. Then as fast as she had bitten me, the pain numbed and everything got fuzzy. Suddenly, I was calm and it was hard to keep my eyes open.
My ears rang as the cool rain fell in slow motion, and in between blinks the tall trees above me tripled and swayed, I saw a dark figure to my right and it looked as if it was pulling on something. I couldn't think, I couldn't move, I felt powerless and empty when my knees gave beneath me and I fell to the muddy ground. Laying there, with my eyes closed, things got hazy, I heard muffled sounds here and there and I somehow mustered enough energy to open my eyes, to see a dark shape standing over a smaller one on the ground next to me.
Tired I closed my eyes and tried to sleep.
It felt like it had been hours when I opened my eyes again, and suddenly I was awake I understood what I saw. The blond girl was on her knees before me with a cruel smile sprawled across her face. Damon was behind her laying on the muddy ground. Confused, I squinted and tried to piece it together.
What had happened?
The girl said something but I couldn't hear it. I only saw her lips move before her hand crushed my throat in a painful grip. I struggled and cried as my lungs burned with the need for air. My head being lifted up and then it was slammed back down on something cold, jagged and hard.
My hands tried to pry the thing off my neck but it wouldn't move. I tried so hard with all I had left. Just as Igave up and I stopped fighting it, it was suddenly gone, and I cried as the painful air rushed back into my burning lungs. I rolled onto my side and half of my face was in something cold and wet, and I realized it was still raining.
I opened my eye that wasn't in the mud once more, to see two dark things, One big one, holding the small one up off the ground by its neck.
A purple circle was glowing, it was pretty and I smiled.
The big one spoke but I couldn't hear anything except a high pitched ringing in my ears. I saw the smaller one be put back on the ground, and suddenly it was gone.
The big one came towards me and I closed my eyes.
I heard him scream my name before everything went black.
