A Girls Day

Good morning, Sunshine," my mom said as she came into my room, going over opening the curtains, letting the sun come in.

I groaned, barely opening my eyes, looking at her, asking, "Mom, what are you doing?"

"You and I are going to have a Girls Day, so get up and get ready. I'll be waiting in the living room."

Before I could ask what we were doing, she had already walked out of my room. I sat up in bed for a few minutes, trying to get awake enough so I could walk to the bathroom. Once I stood up, I yawned, stretched and went over to my closest to get my clothes out that I was going to wear and went to take a shower. When I was dressed, I brushed my hair and put it up in a high ponytail, and then went downstairs to find my mom, who was already to go, sitting on the couch, waiting for me.

"Are you ready to go?" she asked, getting up and grabbing her purse.

I nodded my head and asked as we were heading to the car, "So, where are we going?"

Mom smiled at me and said, "It's a surprise."

I groaned and she just laughed. She knows I hate surprises.

"Oh, come on, you're going to love it."

Mom and I made small talk on our way to wherever we were going. She asked me how school was going, how my friends were, how I was doing. She knew all of this, but she was distracting me.

Soon we pulled up at Ocean Spa, which was a brand new spa that just opened up in New York a few days ago.

"Mom, "I said as I got out of the car, looking from her to the spa.

"What?" she asked, doing her best to hide her smile.

I hadn't moved from the car yet. "Are you sure about this?" I looked at her and back at the spa again.

"Of course, I'm sure, now come on." She stretched her arm out for me.

I shut the door and went to where she was and we walked in together.

"Hey, welcome to Ocean Spa. My name is Caroline, how can I help you?" a red-headed, green-eyed girl asked.

"Um, yes, I have reservations for Hunter," Mom told Caroline.

Caroline typed away on the computer until she found our names.

"Alright, this way," she said and we followed her down a hallway to a room that had two spa chairs sitting beside each other.

"There are two robes hanging behind the door if you want to put them on, and I'll be back in a few minutes," she said, closing the door behind her.

Mom grabbed the robes, handed one to me and I put it on.

It wasn't long until Caroline came back. "Are you ready?" she asked.

"Yes ma'am," I answered.

"Okay, let's start with facials first and then we'll do the pedicures and manicures."

Just then, a girl that looked to be about Caroline's age, early twenties came in. She had dark hair and brown eyes.

"This is Lisa. She'll be helping with your appointments today."

Mom and both said hello to Lisa.

As we were getting facials and everything, I couldn't help but think it felt to be with Mom like this. We hardly get to do anything together so this means a lot to me. I mean my mom has been a single parent since I was little girl so I understand that she did and still does everything she can to provide for me.

___

"So, are we going anywhere else?" I asked as we got back in the car.

Mom looked over at me as she was backing out of the parking lot, smiled and said, "You'll have to wait and see."

I just sat back this time and enjoyed the ride, smiling down at my hands. I had them painted purple with sun flowers, my toes painted the same way. Mom got her nails and toes painted red.

A few minutes later, we were pulling into the movie theater. "We're going to see a movie?"

"Yes," Mom said as she pulled into the parking space. "I thought we could see Beauty and the Beast."

"Okay!" I said, excitedly. She knew that I had been wanting to see this movie.

"Don't eat too much," Mom whispered in my ear as I was getting popcorn and M&M's.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because we are going to go out to eat after this, we are going to end our day by going out to eat."

"Oh," I smiled. "Okay."

___

After the movie, I couldn't stop talking about it. I loved it.

"I'm glad you loved it. I loved it myself. Do you still want to go eat or are you full on popcorn and M&M's?"

I laughed and said, "We can go eat."

"And our final destination is..." Mom trailed off as we pulled into the parking lot of...

"Little's Taco's!" I screamed.

There is one other food I love just as much as I love Chinese, and that's Mexican... especially tacos.

As soon as my mom stopped the car I instantly gout out, and ran to the door, which made her laugh.

"Hello, welcome to Little's Taco's. My name is Samantha. Go ahead and fix your taco's, and I'll get your drinks. What would you like?" a hazel eyed girl with shoulder length blue hair asked. She looked to be about eighteen.

"Sweet tea, please," I told her.

"Make that two, please," Mom spoke up.

"You got it," Samantha said, walking toward the counter.

We fixed our tacos and sat down at the table that Sam put our drinks at.

As I took a bite, Mom asked, "So, have you enjoyed today?"

"Yes, I have. Thanks mama," I smiled at her.

"You're welcome, baby girl. Maya, I know that I wasn't always around for you when you were younger, but I want you to know that will change."

"Mom, what are you talking about?" I asked, looking at her confused.

"Well, I just wish I could've given you a better childhood than I have."

"Mom, stop. You were a single mother trying to take care of herself and her daughter because the man, who was supposed to take care of them, left them and went to start a new family. So, you had to be both Mom and Dad at the same time, and I would have to say that this little girl thanks you. She understands the childhood she had and why."

By the end of what I said, my mom was in tear, but I wasn't done yet. "And I just have to add that I think you have found a great man."

"And thank you for everything you've said, and yes, I would have to say, I agree with you, I have found a great man."

"Yes, you have, and he deserves you and you deserve him," I smiled at her again.

She returned the smile, telling me she loved me and then she said, "Oh, since we're being honest, I'm the one who booked and paid for reservations at the spa, I just didn't want to tell them my last name," she laughed.

And I laughed too.

"I mean, can you imagine the girls' faces at the spa if I told them my last name was Clutterbucket?"

And we both laughed together this time.

We finished eating, and told Sam bye as Mom paid the bill, and she told us to come back. On the way home, I kept thinking that this was the best day I've had with my mom.
