Dustin woke up in his bed, sprawled out like he usually does. But this time was different. He had bandages around his body, especially his chest. He remembered the fight, how his father had kicked him with his big heavy work boots, and felt his rib snap clean in half from inside his body. But he said screw it and stood up.
He walked over to his closet, and pulled all the bandages off. He felt a weight lift from his chest, and felt normal enough so he put on a shirt and opened his door. He checked his phone out in the hall, it read Sunday 10:15 AM. He put his phone back in his pocket and walked down the hall, and then the stairs. He saw an all familiar face sitting in the couch watching TV.
Lizzi was sitting on the worn sofa they had in the living room, still in her pokemon pajamas. She was watching Pokemon, her favorite show.
"Morning short stack." Dustin said as he plopped down next to her on the couch. She gave him a smile.
"Good morning." She responded happily, then turned back to watching her show.
"What do you want for breakfast?" Dustin asked calmly and Lizzi turned to him.
"Pancakes." She said with a smile.
"Shoulda known. Whenever mom isn't home that's usually what you want." Dustin said with a chuckle and stood up, walked into the kitchen and started getting ingredients out. He had just put on an apron when the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it Lizzi." Dustin said, knowing Lizzi wouldn't leave her show to save her own life. Dustin walked to the front door and opened it, and standing the the doorway was Scarlett.
She was wearing a sleek Hawaiian dress, the only strap going around her neck. It was a deep blue color with the occasional splotch of black and white, tweaking cool looking patterns into the mostly blue dress. She was also wearing a pair of dark blue flats, and dark blue makeup made a sharp wing looking thing protrude from her top eyelid.
"Good morning." She said with a smile, then noticed what he was wearing and snickered. "An apron huh? Didn't take you for the cooking type."
"I'm making my sister breakfast. Something you need?" Dustin said with a bored tone and looked into the air, playing with his hair.
"Uh well I was gonna go to a meet up with some friends today, I was wondering if you wanted to come?" Scarlett asked curiously. But Dustin didn't make any reaction to this. And then her stomach growled. "Sorry." She said embarrassed.
"Do you want some food." Dustin said plainly and stopped leaning in the doorway, then stepped aside for her to enter. Scarlett walked in and sat down on the couch with Lizzi.
"Any thing your allergic to??" Dustin yelled from the kitchen.
"No." Scarlett responded. "So you like pokemon huh?" Scarlett asked Lizzi, who was enthralled in the show in front of her.
"Yeah i love it! It's so cool to think people can come up with this kind of stuff." Lizzi responded. Her eyes were shining as she talked to Scarlett. They talked for a few minutes, and watched the show for a little while. Then Dustin called from the kitchen.
"Breakfast is ready." He said, he still sounded bored. Scarlett and Lizzi both ran into the kitchen and sat at the table, where a plate of pancakes and a bottle of syrup were set, alongside a stick of butter and a jar of strawberry jam.
"My brothers a great cook. He always cooks for me when our mom is away. Which is pretty often." Lizzi said while grabbing one of the pancakes and dropping it onto the plate that Dustin had set in front of her. Dustin set one down in front of her as well then grabbed two for himself, then dropped them onto a plate that was sitting on the counter. He grabbed the syrup and slathered the pancakes in it, then he grabbed a fork and started eating.
"Does he always eat away from the table like that?" Scarlett asked Lizzi, who was also eating.
"No, he just probably doesn't wanna sit next to you. You should know by now he's not fond of people." Lizzi said through a mouthful of pancake.
"Oh yeah I know." Scarlett responded, then took a bite of her pancakes. They were very good. She finished her two that she took and stood up. "Compliments to the chef."
"Thanks." Dustin said normally, still sounding bored.
"So about the gathering, do you wanna go with me?" Scarlett asked, sounding more anxious this time.
"Why should I." Dustin said through a bite of food.
"What gathering?" Lizzi inquired curiously.
"I'm going to a gathering of friends today and I wanted Dustin to come with me." Scarlett said casually.
"Dustin your going." Lizzi said quickly and loudly.
"Since when do you give me orders?" Dustin asked firmly, looking in the direction of Lizzi.
"I'm not giving you an order. I'm saying your going. This is the perfect chance for you to make some friends!" Lizzi yelled. She had a big smile on her face, and Dustin knew there was no way he was getting out of this once he saw that smile.
"When is it." Dustin said with a groan.
"It's in about two hours." Scarlett said, suddenly very happy.
"Man that's so long tho... I'm ready now." Dustin said plainly.
"In that? You look like a train wreck. And I can smell you from here." Scarlett said, not sounding rude but more like 'you can't go like that'.
"What's wrong with how I look?" Dustin said flatly. He stuck his hands in his pocket after setting the plate he had in the sink.
"You look like a hoodlum." Scarlett said flatly. She wasn't wrong. Dustin was wearing a pair of black combat boots and torn jeans, which were really torn. And he was wearing a shirt with a pentagram and a severed goats head. His face was also bruised right above the eye and a little on his cheek. But there was nothing she could do about that.
"Thats what I am dumbass." Dustin said flatly.
"Dustin Spade Stone! Language!" Lizzi yelled from behind them.
"Whatever short stack." Dustin said with a slight chuckle.
"Alright come with me. I'll see if I can't find you some decent clothes to wear." She said and grabbed Dustin's wrist, which made him wince in pain. "Oh are you ok?"
"Fine. And you don't have to direct me to my own room." Dustin said and jerked his hand out of her grip. Then he walked up the steps to his room and waited for Scarlett to walk in.
She walked over to his closet and rummaged through his shirts. Most were either black or grey, or had some kind of demonic stuff on it. But she found a dark red Vneck that she thought would look nice on him. And then found a pair of not hole filled jeans which he could wear. They were a faded blue, but matched the shirt fairly well. And then found a pair of white Convers in front a long board in the very back of the closet.
"Here. Go take a shower and put these on, I think you'll look better than you do now. And make sure you put some deodorant on." Scarlett said and handed him the stack of clothes, which she had neatly folded and placed the pair of shoes on top of them. Dustin took them and walked out of the room, then into the bathroom across the hall and closed the door.
When he turned the shower on and stepped inside after stripping down, he couldn't help think one specific thought.
"What have I gotten myself into this time..."
