chapter 6: meet the Dvalins

Damon grabbed his tray, and sat down next to Morgiana, who was playing a game on her scroll while eating lunch. He asked," whatcha playing?" As he unwrapped his cheeseburger. She said shortly," Grimm Tower Defense 3. " Damon looked at the screen, and said," I think your atlesian paladin tower would be better on a spot where its medium range would get more kills. Like here, at this hairpin bend, for instance." And indicated the spot. She sighed, and moved it to the new spot, and lo and behold, the kill counter spiked with an influx of new kills. Another minute, and Morgiana cleared the level, choosing to stop so she could finish her lunch. Before she could pick up her sandwich, however, the school intercom clicked on, and professor ruby said," Would Morgiana Dvalin and Damon Forge please report to the docks immediately. Thank you!~" Damon looked petrified, prompting Morgiana to say, " relax. Im sure we just need to show some transfers around. And even if it was my family, I'm sure they'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Besides, I seriously doubt he holds a grudge." Damon said," I lit a slip-n-slide on fire." Morgiana said," it was an accident-" Damon cut her off, hyperventilating as he yelled," WHILE PEOPLE WERE ON IT!!" She kissed him, prompting him to shut up and blush bright red as she said," shush. Now let's go." Once they reached the docks, a bullhead landed across from them. The doors opening, two people stepped out, and Morgiana ran forward, shouting, "mom! Dad!" Damon sighed, and followed, staying a pace behind Morgiana until he was needed. All too soon, Morgiana's father, a tall, broad-shouldered man named Jason, said," and who are you, young man?" Not even hesitating, Damon held out his hand for shaking, and said," Damon Forge, sir. We've met before, a long time ago." Jason grabbed Damon's hand, and shook it, saying," I remember you, boy. I'm glad your manners have improved. I trust you are treating Morgiana with the utmost respect?" Before Damon could open his mouth, however, Morgiana's mother, a skinny, somewhat waifish woman named Natalie smacked Jason on the arm, and said," don't be rude. Of course he has. Do you think she'd let him see us if he wasn't?" Suddenly, Morgiana's stomach growled, prompting her mother to say, " we're going for lunch. You too, Damon."

Timeskip one hour

The four found seats at a restaurant in the downtown area. Damon ordered a water, and a chicken salad sandwich. Morgiana ordered the same. Mr. And Mrs. Dvalin ordered coffees and steaks, both cooked medium well. As they ate, Mr.Dvalin said," so, Damon. What's your relationship with Morgiana?" Morgiana looked at him, and Damon sighed, saying," we're dating." Mrs.Dvalin's eyes widened, as did Morgiana's. Mr.Dvalin nodded, and said," mind coming with me for a few?" It was a question, but the underlying message was,' come with me.' Damon nodded, and they both walked out front. Mr.Dvalin sat quietly for a minute, leaving Damon to sit quietly. Finally, Mr.Dvalin said," I can see that you've changed from the carefree, immature goofball you once were to a serious, mature young man who's lost almost everything he knew, and as such is willing to die to defend what he has left, and what he's gained since. Your eyes tell me the story of losing something important, but making the choice to pick yourself up and keep moving. I admire that look. But I also fear it. Such loss breeds hatred, and hatred breeds evil, a darkness of the soul. Morgiana believes she alone can keep your demons at bay. But what will happen to you if something happens to her?" Damon said," I trust Morgiana with my life. To be completely honest, I don't know what I'll do if she leaves me for someone else. I suppose I'll move on like I always have. But if she gets hurt or dies, you'd best believe the person who did it will pay dearly for it." Mr.Dvalin said," even if it's you?" Damon said," Especially if it's me. She opened her heart to me, someone who caused her pain by ignoring her feelings. I can never forgive myself if I hurt her more than i have already." Mr.Dvalin said," You're an honorable young man. I trust you will keep her safe, and treat her well?" Damon nodded, and said," I swear, on not just my honor, but the honor of my family, I will keep her safe. You have my word." Mr.Dvalin smiled, and smacked Damon lightly on the shoulder, saying,"let's go back. I'm sure we're worrying them. And everyone knows, a happy wife equals a happy life. And an unhappy one equals stone cold misery for the rest of the marriage." Damon said," me and Morgiana aren't married. But I suppose the same princpiles apply." They both laughed, and walked back into the restaurant.
