Chapter 22
I look at my squad.
"We have to go underground or on the roof." I tell them.
"Roof." Olden says.
"Roof." Keene echoes.
"Roof it is." I say. Looking for a way to the roof of the houses, I hear distant planes. I decide to enter the houses and find a way up from the inside. My squad agrees and we choose a green and black house which is very distinct.
Once inside, the smell of chocolate clogs our noses. A warm, fresh chocolate scent. The inside of the house is a color or white and aqua green. The sofas packed with boxes of food. Pictures of a family of four on the chimney mantel.
"Try to look for a way to the roof." I command.
"Yes sir." The soldiers begin searching. I walk to the kitchen. The tiles shiny and the cabinets empty. Why didn't the family take the food on the sofas? I ask myself. Back in the living room, the television turned on. Dorothea and Jery are standing side by side in the balcony of their Capitol Hall dwelling.
"These are your presidents Dorothea and Jery with a special report. Any residents in York and Dertus Capitol are to evacuate immediately. Board the trains and go to Rich. The Elite battle has begun. Good luck to all." Jery concluded. Then a man in a suit whispers something in Dorothea's ear. She looks directly at the screen. Her eyes on me.
"Bovise Asherman. We warned you, and you better watch out. And if your army surrenders, we'll let your loved ones go." She says. The screen turns to the seal of the country. The seal is a silhouette of two people holding hands and the words One Nation One Justice in fancy letters in a circle around them. Then the screen turns off.
"They need to improve their lying skills of they want us to surrender." Keene says.
"There's a ladder out back leading to the roof." Scarlet says picking a can of peas from a box.
"Everyone take two cans, well need 'em later on." I proposed. Everyone did and placed them in our backpacks. The flames outside still burning. The ladder is on the side of the wall, I decide to climb first. The wind on the roof smells of smoke and ash. We try to be as less visible as possible on the roofs of the houses. Hiding behind air ducts and water tanks whenever we heard planes.
We traveled about five blocks in the direction to Base 1. We were traveling normally until bombs began to drop again. The first fell right between the group, crushing three soldiers immediately. The second one behind me, the force of it throwing me onto the floor. Olden was blasted right over me, his gun dropping to the floor. I see Keene over an air-duct, motionless. A bomb falls on the street, sending a shower of rock and dirt over us.
"Let's go! we have to bet back-" A soldiers voice is cut by an explosion. It blasts my ears and me and Olden try to get up safely. Joyse and Flux are following. When I look back, many soldiers lie burnt or blown to the ground.
"Hey! This way!" A soldier in upfront yells. He jumps off the roof, but there is no smack following. Only a thug and shifting of items. He landed in an open dumpster.
"This is the only way down!" He yells. Olden jumps without hesitation and I'm up here trying to find a way to jump without my uniform getting in the way. I end up taking off my helmet and holding the earpiece in my hand until I'm back down again. I'm the only one with this extravagant uniform and I think it is dumb since it may give me away standing out the most.
I jump into the dumpster on my back. Landing in bags of trash and scraps of food. Although there is no disgusting reek. As if the smell is wiped off with air fresheners. I get out of the dumpster, placing the earpiece back on.
"You alright?" Sterling asks.
"We got bombed. Some are dead." I say.
"You better get the hell put of there, go underground. Abort base one, you have to reach number two." He orders.
"Where your standing, you're gonna have to safely move on right on winder. There's a building named Serpent. Inside is a passageway leading underground. Squad three is there right now." He says.
"Copy that, well staring moving in a bit." I tell him.
"Not in a bit! Now! Alphas are on foot, once they see you, they might kill you!-" Sterling is cut off by static. A beeping sound follows. Saying the signal is lost.
