We ran through the institution, ignoring the remarks of the Sisters, telling us to walk. Thomas laughed, perhaps he'd have a new friend. Evangeline shouted happily, and I ran ahead, desperate for someone new to talk to. We arrived at the reception room, halting in the doorway, as we saw The Mother with her back to us, talking to the new arrival. The Mother turned.
"Ah, here's your new tour guides." She smiled scarily at us, and stepped aside to show us the recent addition.
Martha had counted wrong. There were two new boys. Twins. One seemed quiet and shy, he stared at the ground. The other stepped up straight away and shook my hand. "I'm Lachlan, this is Ivan!" He put an arm around his brother and brought him forward, grinning. The boys had honey blonde hair, the curliest I'd ever seen, and matching birthmarks on their faces, that almost looked like a flower. I smiled right back at him, and introduced my small group around me.
"I'm Silas, this is Evangeline, Thomas and Martha." Lachlan nodded at each in turn, and winked at Evangeline. I moved in front of her. Thomas tilted his head at the twins.
" what's wrong with you? You look fine."
I grabbed his wrist, shaking my head at him vigorously.
" Don't ask people that, it's rude!"
Lachlan simply laughed, and pushed his brother forward.
"He knows the fancy words."
Ivan looked up, biting his nails nervously, and glanced back at his brother, who just gave him a thumbs up, oblivious to his uncomfort.
"Well, uh, Lachlan has, um, Anterograde amnesia, and, uh , ADHD."
Lachlan cut in, grabbing his brother by the shoulders, making Ivan jump.
"Told you he knew the bigs words!"
Lachlan went back to exploring the room.
"And, um, I-I've got Agoraphobia.... and panic attacks sometimes... but lachie tends to forget that."
I smiled supportively, beckoning the twins through the door, this was not good. How would The Mother's punishments affect them? I cleared my head of the thought and took my small cluster of people to the garden, showing them the plants, and then the rest of the place.
