Chapter 2

MAGNUS

My first day as a senior in Idris High hasn't been going well.

It's almost halfway through the year, so it's understandable that people have their "groups", but really, these people are assholes!

I notice people keep looking at me weirdly. Maybe it's my clothes. I look down. Greenish-yellowish skinny jeans, and a sparkly top. What's wrong with that?!

I hear laughter and grunts and taunts. I follow the sound to a small, empty side hallway. It's not even really a hallway, but I see about four boys pinning one other boy to the wall. The boy against the wall is QUITE pleasant to look at. He has shaggy black hair and blue eyes that... I've seen that look before.

He's blind.

"Hey! Leave him alone!" I yell, making my way towards the leader of the pack, a boy with blonde hair and almost golden eyes.

He looks at me with a smirk. "Who the hell are you?" he asks, looking me up and down.

"I'm Magnus Bane, thank you very much. Now get away from him," I demand, pointing to the black haired boy.

The golden boy snorts. "Whatever. Have fun with him. Lets go, boys!" He calls off his pack, who follow him away.

But before he leaves, the golden boy turns around. "I'm Jace, by the way. You might wanna watch your back, Bane."

Once they're gone, I stand in front of their victim, who's now sitting on the floor. I kneel in front of him.

"Hey, are you okay?" I ask softly.

He turns his head to me. "Yeah, I'm fine." He wipes some blood from his jaw.

"I'm Magnus," I greet him.

"I know. I heard. I'm not deaf, too," he says, suddenly cold.

"I didn't mean to offend you," I say.

The boy sighs. "That's a first."

"What do you mean?" I ask.

"Everyone hates me. Except my sister," he explains.

"I don't hate you," I blurt.

The boy frowns. "You're definitely new here. I'm the outcast of the school. I'm blind and gay," he says.

I feel something for him. Not sympathy, but... Understanding. I know what it's like to not be accepted. Not as much as this boy, I guess, but pretty close.

"I guess I'll be an outcast, too. I'm gay," I tell him.

He tilts his head. "Oh."

"Yep. What's your name?"

"Alec," he says quietly, "Alec Lightwood."

"Well, Alec, I guess we're sticking together from now on," I tell him.

He smiles. "I guess so."
