We walked down the path in silence. I had invited Jack over for lunch. We approached the house. A beautiful cottage. Once inside I busied myself in the kitchen making some sandwiches for me and Jack and a boiled egg
and soliders for Scarlett.
I walked into the living room where Jack was sat in front of a glowing Scarlett playing peek-a-boo. I put down the tray and Scarlett an Jack both looked up.
"Food Mama?" Scarlett asked
"Yep soliders and egg." Scarlett clapped her hands and toddled over to the coffee table and fell into my arms. I lifted her up onto my lap and she reached out for her bread, dipped it in the egg and popped it into her mouth.
"Good Scarlett?"
She nodded up at me and continued eating.
All the while Jack sat there watching her. Even though he had only known her afew hours he seemed transfixed by her. Guess i was the Dad in him. The realisation.
"I'm going to put Scarlett down for her nap then we can talk." I picked up Scarlett and trudged up the carpeted stairs to her room. When I came back down Jack was sat on the sofa wringing his hands together. Obviously nervous. He looked up when he heard me coming. "I'm sorry." He said. "I'm sorry I left you, I never got back in touch or for that matter even tried. I'm sorry for not being here to support you, look after Scarlett, be a Dad to her. I hope you can forgive me for everything I've done wrong. I know you have a right never to want to talk to me again. But, please if you can find it in your heart let me try and be a Dad to our daughter. I understand you might not want a relationship. But, by going away I made the biggest mistake of my life. On that holiday, I fell in love with you, and I think I still am. I know it's big and that but yeah."
I stared at him wided-eyed. He might still love me? I moved on long, long ago. How would I find it in my heart to say that to him. On that holiday I had waited to hear those words, but they never came. My feelings left and all memory of him.
