"You should go back home."
As soon as the words roll off Edd's tongue, I regret going to the roof with him.
"But... why?"
"You've been living with us for what? A few months now?"
"Yeah."
I clasp my hands together and begin to think of a topic I'd been so eager to forget; my family.
"Well, you never told us about where you came from. You must have family, friends, people who miss you. It can't be easy for you to just abandon them like that."
He pauses for a minute and we both sit silently. Then, he speaks up again.
"I just think that as much as we love you being here, I'd feel bad if it seems as if you have to stay. You must be homesick, and I don't want to be responsible for that. I care about you (y/n), you're one of my best friends. That's why I think we should try to figure out how to get you back home."
Another few awkward minutes pass, and a trickle of tears begin to roll down my cheeks. Edd notices and places his hand on my shoulder. The trickle becomes a flood, and suddenly I'm sobbing and shaking. I don't ever want to go home to my parents and what I had there. I wish I could just forget.
"(Y/n)? What's wrong?"
"I can't go home."
"W-why not?"
"There's nothing for me there."
"What do you mean?"
I bury my head into Edd's chest and he wraps his warm arms around me, trying to calm me down. Instead of prying for answers, he just holds me there and waits until I'm able to speak again. I pull away from him and wipe my tears.
"My parents are strict and mean, and they never let me do anything I wanted. It was like living in a prison. I wasn't even allowed to have friends, let alone a boyfriend. My only escape was the internet, where I could pretend I was happy and watch tv and videos and no one could ruin it for me. Sad, I know. I had no siblings either. That's why I was so happy to find myself here. You guys were always my favorite and when I fell through that mirror, it was like a dream come true."
He just sits, looking at the darkening sky.
"I had no idea. I'm so sorry."
"You don't have to be sorry, you didn't do anything wrong."
"I made you cry."
"It's okay, it's not you, it's the memories that our conversation brought back. Please don't feel bad."
"Okay."
We both lay down and watch the blue carpet of sky above us fade to orange, and then black. A few stars begin to flicker and the moon is now visible. If I focus long enough, I can see the night sky is filled with countless stars, like sparkling gems.
"We should destroy it."
Edd looks at me, raising his eyebrow in confusion.
"What?"
"The mirror. We should destroy it."
"Would it make a difference?"
"It would make me feel better. Then I can really put my past behind me."
"Okay, but good luck convincing Matt."
"I'm sure he'll understand."
"Yeah, you're right."
"I'm going to do it right now."
"Seriously?"
"Yes seriously."
I get up and shimmy to the edge of the roof before (not) gracefully hopping down. Edd follows suit, and next thing we know, we're standing in front of Matt. It isn't very hard to convince him to let us get rid of the mirror. He says he doesn't like it much anyways, which is surprising. Gives him the heebie jeebies. Edd and I collect the mirror from the attic and slam it into the grass of the backyard. In one hand, Edd has a flashlight, in the other, a half finished Cola. Both my hands are occupied by the biggest sledgehammer I could find in Tord's workshop. Tord and Tom insisted they should watch, said they wanted to record it. What a bunch of weirdos. As soon as everyone is in the backyard, I lift the sledgehammer over my head.
"Oh-ah (y/n)! Don't hold it like that you'll hurt yourself!"
Tord jogs over to me and shows me how to hold it properly.
"Thanks."
"Hey, yeah no problem."
I get ready, and countdown from three. Then, I thrust the hammer down with all the strength I have, cracking the glass on the mirror. Honestly, I was hoping for something more... eventful. Now angry that I didn't do so well at first, I continue to smash it harder and harder until there are a million tiny molecules of glass all over the place. For a final touch, in my rage, I snatch Tom's Smirnoff from his hands and pull a lighter out of my pocket.
"(Y/n)! What the fuck! I was drinking that-uh what are you doing?"
I pour the alcohol all over the destroyed mirror and light it up. Matt starts to scream and i think maybe I went too far.
"Okaaay (y/n) I think that'll be good. Matt go get some water buckets please."
"Uh sorry. I got a little carried away."
Tord just walks up and high fives me.
"That was freaking awesome dude! I could really feel the waves of rage."
"Uh? Thanks?"
After the fire is out, and the mess is covered with a tarp to avoid Ringo stepping on glass, we all retreat to our rooms.
