Chapter 四
Time Flying By

A decade has passed since I was secretly taken in by the elders of the Ichijo family. The woman, Tsukuyomi Ichijo, was immediate in her act as a stern but fair mother to me. It is all thanks to her that I now am healthy and can act like a lady while still being free to be my sarcastic and somewhat childish self. She had passed a few years ago, thanks to her reputation of being a renowned singer allowed me to attend her funeral without raising questions. Some people did question me, out of mostly curiosity as her name was better know to the older generation. It was a very sad day for me, but I picked myself back up the next day and plastered on a small smile to mask my grieving. Her last words to me were to keep smiling, and so I shall. Her husband, Asato Ichijo, integrated me into the Senate in a casual manner, as to not raise suspicions, and now I stand at a decent ranking. Not so high where my name was renowned, but enough to allow me to roam free or accompany my father figure on simple tasks.

I was going to do everything in my power to repay him for all he, and his wife, have done for me. Not only had they taken me in, but they raised me well and taught me the things I never knew before. How to read and write so that I can communicate, how to defend myself--and, if need be, how to use my abilities--along with many other things. They didn't force me into stuffy dresses nor told me how to dress--unless necessary, like I was about to walk out in something I would later regret for my whole life--and bought me the clothes that I liked. Of course I never took advantage of their (stren) kindness and tried my very best to not ask for more than what was needed. Though my birthday I would allow them to spoil me, mostly because Tsukuyomi would whine if I didn't.

Now I was seated in a limo, sitting across from Asato in silence, happily doodling away on the small notepad that I had gotten for myself last week. I had been eyeing it ever since I laid eyes on it when I was last out shopping with Asato, but made Asato promise to let me earn enough on my own to buy it instead of just getting it for me. It took a solid two weeks of saving my paychecks, but I was finally able to buy the expensive notebook. Expensive, but practical as I knew how to reuse the cover to make a new notebook once I filed out all the original pages. Tsukuyomi was really big on expanding my practical knowledge and had me do crafts with her once every two weeks. It was good therapy for me. "Ryda, remember that person will be in close proximity to you. Do not let him walk all over you, you are not lower than him." Asato stressed to me, never looking up from the papers he was reading over.

He did however, look up when he heard my pen finish scribbling to see my reply. 'I know, Asa. You've trained me to be strong and now I have the confidence to go with all the hard work.' I smiled a closed eye smile as I held up the scribble on the notebook page to him. Little doodles of flowers and leaf vines around my message. I wasn't the best at doodling, but it was still fun to scribble around.

He nodded in approval. Just as he did so the limo had stopped in front of tall metal gates that blocked off a castle like academy from the rest of the world. We had arrived at my destination, and it was time to part ways. As I went to unbuckle my seatbelt, Asato spoke up one last time. "Watch over that grandson of mine as well, would you?" I looked back at him as I was about to close the door behind me and nodded with a smile, showing him that I will do just that. With that he looked forward, away from me, and closed his eyes. I closed the door and off the limo went to an unknown destination to me. Asato had some private business to take care of; I never questioned it as it was not really my place, nor did I really care. It was his business, not mine.

I adjusted the bag on my shoulder and looked up at the tall gates before releasing a sigh. Well, it is about time I make my appearance. And with those final thoughts I took my first steps forward to my next mission.

I was now in an office with two students and the headmaster of the academy. One of the students was a boy with a tattoo on his neck that I recognized as an old way of taming vampires, I could also smell that he was a level E... well level D would be more accurate as he has yet to fall into madness. It must be so painful... that boy is carrying a heavy burden. I shifted my eyes to the short haired girl in the room. She had a familiar scent, even her voice was sending off bells in my mind, but I couldn't quite place a reason behind it. Something deep down in my gut told me not to get too close to her, however, and I plan on acting on that gut feeling.

The headmaster placed down the documents that he was reading over, documents that I had already personally signed and stamped before arriving. Though it took me all night since I decided to do all my paperwork the night before, that was thanks to my good ol' habit of procrastination. A habit that Asato has blamed Tsukuyomi for, claiming that the habit was probably rubbed off onto me from her.

"Alright, everything seems according to what was discussed." The headmaster gleamed. "I'll have these signed and mailed off tonight, how does that sound, Representative Ryda?" I simply nodded my agreement to the man, who had already been informed beforehand about my condition. He clapped his hands together like a happy grandmother. "Wonderful! Yuki, Zero, please escort our new addition to the student roaster to her dorm."

The girl immediately agreed in enthusiasm while the boy looked as if he wanted to do no such thing. "She'll be staying in the moon dorm, I want you both right back on patrols the moment you get her there."

With that we were out of the former Vampire Without Fangs' office and walked down some halls silently. The girl kept trying to strike up conversations with me, but I only gave her silent replies. The boy, Zero, just seemed irritated by the whole situation and his partner's constant attempts to speak with me seemed to be adding to his irritation. I'm assuming the girl is the only one not aware that I cannot speak... how odd. I thought to myself as I pondered over this oddity. After all my scar is on display for the whole world to see; makes it easier than having to constantly pull down my scaff to answer questions as to why I cannot speak. I concluded my thoughts with the answer that this girl was simply dense. Or possibly stupid...

Upon arrived at some more gates on the other side of a wide bridge like path I bowed in thanks to my escots before taking my leave to the dorms. I had just a bag with me, my other belongings should have been brought over last night and set up by now. As I was leaving, my ears caught a bit of the academy guardians' conversation.

"Wonder if she hates me, she didn't say a single thing when I tried to talk to her." The girl, Yuki, sighed. "What do you think, Zero?"

I could somehow picture the blank look of 'I'm so done' plastered on Zero's face just from his tone when he answered the girl's question, "Moron, she can't speak; she's mute. Were you asleep when that stupid old man explained to us this morning, or just blind to the obvious?"

I chuckled as at the sound of surprise coming from the girl as I left earshot from the remaining of their conversation. I carefully walked up the steps to get to the front doors of the dorm and turned the handle to enter. As I entered the threshold was lined with vampires from level C's and up, all wearing beautiful outfits and all with very dangerous looks in their haunting eyes. I kept walking straight down the path laid out for me till I was a few feet from the bottom of a spiral staircase where at the top stood a man I never thought I'd ever see again in my life. Kaname Kuran.

He didn't look different from when we last met, nor did he act any different either. Still as indifferent with me as ever. "Representative Ryda, welcome to the Night Class." He descended the stairs slowly like the narcissist he was, many of the woman in the room cooing over him and his status, looks, or deep voice. Not me, I've heard deeper.

Smiling politely I held up my notebook, my prewritten message laid out on the page in my neatest cursive handwriting.

'Thank you, I look forward to living here with everyone, Mr. Kuran.'
