"Hi boys!" Mister and Misses Novak walked into Dean's apartment. Tonight was the night, together Cas and Dean had arranged a dinner that would give them the chance to share their prolonged secret. Everything had been at ease until Castiel's parents walked in and the sound of breaking glass obstructed the air. Castiel fell to the floor and felt the tension creep its way into his lungs as he held his breath. Dean rushed to his side, whispering that they would be alright just as Castiel's parents walked into the kitchen, "Everything okay?"
Sharp shards of glass were scattered across the floor and Castiel was picking them up while his father inattentively watched. A breath stuttered in Castiel's lungs before he let it out, "Everything's fine. Clumsy me." He stammered, still on his knees, while his parents awkwardly stood there.
Dean stood up, throwing a forced smile onto his face. "Alright! Who's hungry?"
Castiel softly bit his lip then got off the ground too. Once the glass was in the trash, he joined the party of three at the table. Richard was laughing at something Dean said when he felt Castiel clutching at his fingers beneath the table. The warmth and softness of Dean's own hand let him know he was there, so he wouldn't be as timid.
"So what drove you to become an office of the law Dean? Jody always mentions how young and ambitious you were your first year." Richard curiously nodded at his wife's question.
"Well, in all honesty I was a pretty troubled teenager in high school. I'm quite surprised Jody and Bobby were able to put up with my hounding and whining for so long—" They laughed. "—So, graduating high school was the first of all my concerns. Completely opposite of my brother Sammy though, he had it all planned out...Anyways after graduating, Jody just hired me right away. And I was cool with that since I had no other plans."
Richard smiled, "Oh that's right, Bobby mentioned Sam! He's living in...."
"California! Yeah, trying to become a lawyer. He's a smart kid. Always has been." Dean smiled like a proud dad then continued eating. Castiel listened to Dean charm his parents longer while he just pushed around the food on his plate. Clearly having lost his appetite.
"Are you okay honey? You're awfully quiet." The uneasy fret in his eyes grew as she glanced at him. He gulped, "Y-yeah, i'm just a little sleepy...How's your dinner?"
"Lovely actually! I'm surprised since you barely cook at home. I'm assuming Dean did most of the cooking." As she raised her brows the sides of Castiel's lips quivered upwards into a weak smile, "Nope. Not really, he's actually not that great at it."
"I tried." The freckled boy smiled too.
"Sorry to disrupt the topic, but you told us you had something to share with us tonight Son?" Seconds later his father finally brought up the dreaded news. A ringing noise screamed in Castiel's ears and his smile fell. He could feel his own finger nails digging into Dean's hand, "Yes." Being afraid was a cowardly thing Castiel promised himself he'd try to avoid tonight. Yeah, it seemed nearly impossible not to be a little scared when confessing he was in a relationship with another man, but he really didn't need to be. He loved Dean, unconditionally, and his parents deserved to know about them.
"Dean and I have become practically inseparable these past few months..." Tears stung at Castiel's blue eyes while his mother sighed, absolutely perturbed. "Honey, you're worrying me. What is it?"
"We're in a relationship." Dean spat out before Castiel could. In a flash of shock, Mr.Novak watched his son's face crumble even further, "We meant to tell you sooner."
"How long have you two been...in a relationship?" His mother peeped and Castiel sighed, "um, after my birthday we made it official."
"Made it official? As in you two had se—" His pale mother's eyes widened. "No! We haven't...nothing like that." Castiel vigorously shook his head no.
"Look...Ma'am, Sir, for a few months now I've gained the strongest feelings for your son. Cas is strong, very smart, surprisingly funny, and isn't like anyone I've ever met. Yeah, we've had our feuds, but more importantly I have fallen in love with him. I don't expect either of you to trust me right away, because we kept this all a secret, which I understand. But Never would I hurt Castiel, I have no bad intentions, and I have and will continue to love and protect him if you let me."
So the boys finally did it! They told Castiel's parents...and I sorta left y'all on a cliff hanger.
