In my opinion at the beginning Niall was the closest with Liam and he told Liam about his crush on Harry and how he couldn't be with Harry because of all the Larry rumors and that's why Liam always teases them or protects our Nialler (like during that video diary when he pulled Louis away from Harry because he knew that Niall was jealous and hurt).
