"Fucking great. My Mom knows I snuck out."
"That just means you can't go home. You won't survive the night," Wes says with a cheeky smile. He's lying down and leaning on his elbow beside me on the couch. Something about his position is so sexy.
"If I didn't go home, my Mom would call the cops just to be extra, even if I told her where I am."
"Don't go yet."
"I really need to." I text my Mom for the second time that i'm about to leave then stand up.
Wes jumps up from the couch and I face him, waiting for what he's about to say but nothing comes out. He looks conflicted for a moment, then pecks my lips. It's so sudden that i'm so shocked I could laugh. It's like the way a little kid kisses his first girlfriend.
"After last night, you're nervous about kissing me?" I burst out laughing and he blushes.
"I didn't know if you wanted to."
"Why the sudden lack of confidence? A few weeks ago you were basically forcing your lips on me."
He shrugs. "I realised I really like you... more than I thought."
I smile, leaning closer and putting my hands around his neck, then kissing him. We're one minute into a kiss that turns into a heated make out when my phone starts buzzing like crazy in my pocket.
"Ugh," I pull back, taking it out. Instead of it being my Mom, it's Jace. "I'm gonna walk home. My Mom needs time to cool off." I roll my eyes and start walking to the front door while putting my phone to my ear.
"Why the fuck is Alex Fuentes harassing me about your whereabouts?" Jace says, his voice sounding different. He must be extremely stoned.
I open the door and smile at Wes. "Good luck," he says, smiling back.
"Is that Wesley Quinn?"
"Do you always say full names when you're high?" I start walking down the street, enjoying the cool air of the night and the stars that fill the sky. I love stars. They remind me of a life beyond boys and school and grades. Looking up at them, they make all of the things we worry about seem so stupid.
"Why are you sneakin' off to Wesley Quinn's house?"
"Because he's my friend?"
"Meanwhile i'm gettin' shit 'cause Alex thinks you run to me like a little baby."
"Thanks. I'm gonna go now."
"No, wait. I wasn't calling you that – Alex is acting like that. Not to be all bitchy but he legit thinks you're like in love with me."
"Nice to know. I'm gonna go now."
"Wait! Don't be like that; I don't like it."
"Do you enjoy awkward conversations?"
"This ain't awkward," he laughs to himself for a few seconds too long and I stop myself from laughing at his laugh. "So what were you and Wes doin'?"
"Watching a movie. What were you doing?"
"Just got a blowie from a girl who's now giving one to another guy."
"Aww. Did she break your heart?"
"It's already broken."
"So is mine."
He's silent.
"Seems like you're in a good mood. I was in the mood for an argument."
"Can still give you one," he clears his throat. "Why did you tell Alex about me pushing you?"
