"keep your face always towards the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you"

millie

today was our first day back at school since spring break and my amazing trip with finn, and i wasn't particularly looking forward to it. i wished i was back at the lake house with finn.

i wore a plain denim skirt, with a flowy white t-shirt tucked into it, with of course my yellow converse. today i decided to wear my hair in a ponytail, i felt a lot more girly than usual.

i skipped down the stairs, peering outside to see finn's car parked in the driveway. with furrowed brows i quickly walked into the kitchen to see finn sitting at the table with my family.

"finn?" i asked, wondering why he was here.

"hey, mills. i came to pick you up and your parents invited me in for breakfast" he explained, finishing a slice of toast. what was happening?

"morning, love" my mom smiled at me from the table.

"i like finn, millie" my young sister ava beamed up at me with young, twinkling eyes.

"me too, ava" i ruffled her hair. "we should probably get going" i said to finn, glancing at the clock.

"yeah, yeah, have a good day mr. and mrs. brown! you too, ava" he smiled at my family as he got up from the table.

"what are you doing having breakfast with my parents?" i whispered to finn on our way out the door.

"i dunno, they just invited me in and i couldn't say no. it was nice to feel like part of a family meal though" finn said, climbing in the car and making me feel a pang of sadness for finn.

i knew his parents were rarely around and his brother went to college a few towns away, i never realized how much he must miss them.

"well, you are my family. you're part of it now" i smiled at him, grabbing his hand as be began to drive. he smiled a sad smile.

"come over for dinner tonight." i said, not really giving him the chance to say no.

"millie, it's okay, i don't want to intrude-" he started.

"finn, stop. you're not intruding, my family absolutely loves you and so do i. you're coming" i smiled, bringing our intertwined hands up to where the back of his hand was touching my cheek, warming it.

"fine" he rolled his eyes playfully. "you look beautiful by the way. i can see your face better when your hair's up" he smiled, making me giggle.

it was science class, second period, and now that finn wasn't some stranger next to me on the bench, it was a lot harder to focus.

"stop it, you're distracting me" i quietly giggled as finn was trying to talk to me. he just crossed his arms and leaned back, smirking.

the bell finally rang, meaning we could go for lunch and i could actually pay attention to finn.

"hey, sads" i said plopping down at our usual table in the cafeteria, finn beside me.
