"Keep hope in your heart, not in your head."

Jared finished, looking to his house mate expectantly, met only with a bored gaze on Connor's end.
The latter opened his mouth to speak but retracted before shrugging.
"That's it? You don't have anything to say about the situation?"
Connor sighed before resting his chin on the palm of his hand and beginning to reason with Jared calmly, "If I say something will you shut the fuck up for five minutes?"
Offended and falsely taken aback, Jared raised his eyebrows and crossed his arms. "Fine."
Connor sat up in his seat and cracked his knuckles before sighing deeply and stretching out.
"You're an asshole and a shitty friend. I'm not trusting your judgement, but the guy's clearly pretty lonely if he lets you treat him like that. Probably got some issues- is his father in the picture?- you know what? Don't answer that, not my place, I don't care."
He paused, sipping his tea before continuing,
"If he is avoiding you, I wouldn't blame him after hearing the way you talk about him. You two clearly have some shit you need to work on. Look, stuff happens, but being a bad friend by talking shit about him won't make anything better. Now leave me alone, I have no classes today and practice doesn't start till four."
Jared sat in silence, feeling an enfuriating mixture of guilt, regret, and denial.
Eventually, he got up and made his way out the door, calling back to Connor, "He's coming to the recital on Friday, this conversation never happened."
When the door slammed shut, an aged wave of anger washed gracefully over Connor's mind. He didn't understand how someone could be so disrespectful toward a friend. If he didn't like someone, they knew. He always made sure of that.
In an attempt to let go, he let his mind wander aimlessly. The silence was often calming to Connor, in healthy doses, that is.
And so he sat, getting progressively agrivated as his sips of tea got progressively colder. Staring at a white wall, and through the doorway, past the closed entrance and to the Friday before.
What was he thinking? He sounded like a time appropriate Danny Zucko. The guy didn't seem to mind, though. In fact, under the lights he seemed pretty happy about it. He couldn't even see Connor, right?
It was way too dim, plus I didnt have my hair down so it's not like my shadow would've been recognisable... I guess... I don't know, I've never seen him around campus anyway so it doesn't matter...
But what if he recognises my voice?
That realisation took it's toll on Connor for about eight seconds, before he realised that the likelyhood he would ever have to speak to the boy was slim unless he made it happen himself.
Which he could...
Which he might.
Under the previous, safe, circumstances of last week... but when? He didn't know the guy's schedule and he was busy with the showcase this Friday.
Connor groaned audibly, expressing his displeasure to the kitchen appliances.
"I guess that's a sign."
The room was completely still, the buzz of the fridge-freezer filling the otherwise empty air. A hum of agreement, surely.
Jared.
When Connor turned his head to meet the eyes of the dishes his flat mate had been neglecting, he knew, or at least thought he did, that Friday was a once off.
Zoe.
An undescript bird was making noise somewhere, a gentle and sweet sound to many that translated similar to car alarms in Connor's ears.
Connor.
He raised his arm and following a fatal crash the room fell silent.
-
He sat there for a few minutes, staring at the wall. His long, thin arm lay stiff by his side. For a moment, he felt his eyes tense, but he just held his breath and waited.
Long, dark hair curtained his face and hands as his elbows rested softly on the table. Sighing, he firmly and slowly massaged his temples before allowing his fingers to thread through his tangled mane.
The buzzing had returned and the air was thin.
After giving himself a few more moments he swiftly rose to his feet, trudging with care to grab the sweeping brush from the opposite corner of the room.
He let his mind go blank as he cleared his mess, opting to go on a walk through the park. The weather wasn't too bad. He just had to remember to bring his jacket.
