"Just talk to him," Sophie says.
We are sitting in the cafeteria eating our food. The food at our school is tasteless and bland. Most of it is things such as pizza and spaghetti and meatballs, which I can't eat because I am vegetarian so I have to settle with cold mac and cheese most days.
"But I don't know how," I explain to her.
Sophie rolls her eyes, "It's just like talking to me."
"Oh really," I raise my eyebrows.
"Yeah!"
I laugh, "Sophie, I have known you practically my whole life, it is certainly not the same."
She sighs, "Just try."
I glare at her.
"Pleeeeeeeaseeeee," she whines.
"No!"
Sophie glares back at me shoving food into her mouth. I know that if I try talking to him then my tongue will melt like butter in my mouth and I will just stand there numbly. He would probably think there was something wrong with me. What you have to understand about Bailey is that he isn't super popular, no, I don't like popular guys (they're too full of themselves). He just has this thing about him that I can't quite explain. Just when you look at him, you just want to stare all day. Everything he does, from the way he walks to the way he smiles, is beautiful.
"You've talked to him before haven't you?" she asks.
"I mean yeah, the very first day of school he said 'hi' to me."
"See," she says happily, "You can do it!"
"But that was ages ago."
"C'mon, you knew you liked him the first time you saw him, you told me yourself. If you liked him when you saw him and he talked to you on the first day then you must have liked him then."
"Well yeah..."
"So you can do it again!"
"No I can't," I sigh, "You don't understand...you never will."
(flash back)
I tap my foot on the ground nervously as I stand by myself in the assembly room. I could go and talk to some people, it's not like I don't have any friends that are going to this new school, it's just that I don't really like people that much. People give me anxiety. Just standing in groups with all the noises of people chatting, everyone laughing at their inside jokes, making others jealous by talking about their amazing vacation. And besides, I absolutely HATE small talk and this is one of those situations were you are basically forced to talk people. So yeah, I'm standing by myself. I glance around the room, taking in peoples faces. You can basically tell peoples personalities by watching how they act around their friends. I play a little game in my head, guessing what people could be like.
...class clown
...popular girl
...popular boy
...Ugh, Fuck Boy (I can tell by the way he is eyeing the girls next to him)
...nerd (no offence to her)
...basic bitch
...gees, makeup guru
and...oh...my...god!
Who is that!
I'm looking at a tallish boy standing in the group next to me. He is absolutely gorgeous! I watch as he smiles and laughs with his friends. My mind goes blank and the only thing I can see is him. Him and his friends aren't totally focused on the girls and by what I can kinda hear they are not making dirty jokes so I assume that he is not a fuck boy, that's always a good thing. He could be popular but, once again his friends give it away as they are not that great looking.
Is he gay? I think.
Certainly no one that good looking can be straight. He has to be gay. I listen in further to their conversation. I can't really tell.
"Hey Bailey," a girl says to him as she walks past.
What a beautiful name. Bailey. The boys go crazy and ruffle his hair. He looks slightly embarrassed.
"Dude, that was your ex!" boy 1 exclaims.
Bailey goes red.
Ok yeah, he's not gay.
"Why did she dump you?" boy 2 asks.
Bailey sighs, "She dumped me for Zach," he says sadly.
"Ugh," the boys cry in disgust.
"Look, there's Zach over there," points out boy 1.
"Yeah lets go," boy 3 says.
They all start to walk in my direction. As they walk past, Bailey sees me looking at him and smiles.
"Hey," he says.
"Um, hi," I say back surprised.
Did he really just talk to me? This is gonna be a great year.
