I stand up and look around me. I am in the meadow with the tree. Shaking my head, I walk over to the tree. It has no marks on it, what did Nathan call them? Lichtenberg figures! I touch the renewed bark and shock it. Funny, I didn't feel the tingling sensation as usual. I place my hands on the tree, and before I can even think about sending a bolt of lightning out, one comes. Streaking across the sky, the lightning turns the sky white for a second, then disappears. I close my eyes and prepare myself for the thunder, but it never comes. I see the afterimage of the brilliant display dance over my eyelids.
"Reese?" I hear a soft voice call my name. I spin around and am faced with Anna, standing at the edge of the woods.
"Anna? What are you-" I am cut short as she begins running as fast as her little legs can carry her. I take a step backwards and my back slams up against the tree.
"Anna, stop!" I squeal. She is halfway across the field and I know I can't stop her now. I close my eyes and spread my arms out, ready to catch her. I will always catch her, regardless of what will happen. I feel her mass leap into my arms, her soft breath into my hair, her arms wrapping around my neck, but I feel as strong as ever. I open my eyes and see her pretty face inches from my own. She has the biggest smile on her face.
"How?" I ask her, but she only smiles wider. Then, for the second time that night, a voice speaks from the darkness.
"If you can dream it, you can have it." Looking over Anna's shoulder, I see Nathan steps out of the shelter of the woods and trots toward me. "Quite literal in this sense, though."
I can't process his words. "What do you mean?" I ask.
"I'll explain later," he says as he suddenly appears in front of me. Anna giggles and slides out of my arms. "Right now, at least we have this," he whispers as his hand comes up to cup my face. My eyes flutter closed as he leans in. But right before I feel his soft lips collide with mine, I wake.
